22,000+ Users

Yeah that aint right. Especially since threads arent moving like they should be for a tenth of that user tally.

Pay CLOSE attention to what the forums are telling you ...

What's Going On?
Currently Active Users: 22250
(4750 members and 17500 guests)

Right this moment it is saying that we have 4,750 Registered SnoWest Users on the site. All of those user names are listed right below that statement.

Then it is telling you that we have another 17,500 GUESTS.
Those are people who have hit the forums as a result of a SEARCH ENGINE HIT.

They are not users.
They are visitors that landed on the content of a specific thread as a result of a word/phrase search.

Our traffic in general on the forums has EXPLODED over the last 2 months since we installed the new Proxy Server and RE-integrated our two domains back into one because this has pushed our search engine results MUCH HIGHER.

At that time the Form with the most users (4500+ was the Polaris form, must have been a bad weekend. :boom: :behindsofa: ( just kidding) :face-icon-small-hap

And if you look everyone is still on here!! :face-icon-small-hap

Yeah I do not see 20,000+ sledders on Snowest at any given time, for whatever reason. That is a ridiculous number of people. I am guessing that is around 10% of the sledding population of North America....that is just really really hard to believe.

bet you cc that to the advertisers...lol..

Exactly, it is an inflated bogus # so they can tell the advertisers "look how many people you will be exposed to on our site" in the mean time, we are gonna cram more ads and videos down our paying members throats even though they are screaming for it to stop!!! But don't worry, we are gonna come up with a "compromise" and stop the audio but continue with the data usage devouring streaming video ads!!!!! Well guess what Harris Pub. I am going to compromise on whether I give you any more of my $$$ or not. The compromise is, I will not!!! Everyone who has a premium membership (other than Lifetime) has the opportunity to "compromise" as well!!!

Sorry, I'm on a crusade here!!

Nope.
None of the data that the forums directly generate are used by the advertising department for sales.

They live and die on Goggle Analytics reports and other third party companies that independently evaluate site traffic.

Regardless of where they get their #'s from, is the ad dept. willing to fall on their sword over site traffic vs. what the members who have payed with their hard earned $$$ have to say?????

Do you hear any audio coming from that video ad right now??

Ok, let me explain this again. It is not the audio. It is the whole auto streaming video ads in general!! I, as others have also mentioned, am on a limited monthly data usage plan. Ever since they started the non-stop auto running video add my data usage has skyrocketed!!! Right now as we speak I am pirating off my neighbors signal to be able to be on SnoWest without using up all my monthly data allowance. I will not continue to borrow from my neighbor forever, eventually I will leave SnoWest. As I believe will others. You may not like to hear this Christopher, but when you said in another thread "without advertisers things like SnoWest and Sledheadz would not exist" you were completely wrong. Without us, the forum members, SnoWest forum would not exist. Without us, SnoWest would not have a # to hold in front of advertisers to get them to spend their $$$ with SnoWest. First rule of sales, without the customer you have nothing!! We, the forum members are the customer, we are the link to the site and the advertising dollars generated by this site. If we go, so do the ad dollars. Trust me, I can go. As well as anyone else on this site. I lived for many years when I didn't have internet at all without SnoWest. So can anybody else, but the real question is can SnoWest forum live without us?? I think not. Christopher, I am not asking for all ads to go away, I get it, it is a necessary supplemental income for the website, just get rid of the auto streaming video, that's all. If somebody wants to watch it all they have to do is click on it. Easy Peezy!! Just make it so it doesn't run all on it's own non-stop.

Yes my friend, you could leave. There is absolutely nothing to stop you from logging out and never coming back. And others could follow you. Lord knows I recall all the unending predictions of Doom & Gloom and the end of SnoWest back in 2009. None of them came true. Things changed, some old members left, some new members came, and the forums marched on inspite of all the predictions otherwise.

Like it or not, the reality in the snowmobiling industry is that there are only FOUR major players. And right now those players want to send streaming video out to the masses to try and sell new sleds. So it should come as no surprise that SnoWest, who has a pretty keen ear to the industry, is responding to the requests of those 4 majors.

What happened today was a compromise between what the Manufacturer/Advertisor wanted and what the User/Forum Member wanted. That compromise was to disable the sound, but allow the video. Based on the rather ABRUPT termination of inbound PMs, E-Mails and SMS TXT messages right after that change was made, I think its safe to say that by and by most of our members were pretty happy with that compromise.

As I have said before, we will NEVER be able to make the forums perfect for every member, it just isn't going to happen. There will always be aspects of it that bother or annoy someone. Its the nature of the beast when your serving 85,000 members, and a couple hundred thousand guests.

As for your issue with bandwidth.
I have already brought that up with the guys at Harris. That conversation was about members accessing the forums over Cell connections on Phones and Tablets, but the underlying issue is the same for anyone that is bandwidth constrained. I "Might" have a solution for you in a week or two, when it gets fully coded out I will let everyone know. Till then, what we have now was the best compromise I could get for our members.

I am sorry I can't offer you exactly what your asking for. But I don't own the forums and I don't get to make the final decisions. I just do my best to keep them running as smoothly as possible given the constraints placed upon me by those above my pay grade.

Guys, GUESTS can't post!
All they can do is READ...

Currently Active Users: 22343 (4690 members and 17,653 guests)

Here is a snapshot of daily visitors to the site.
Notice December 18th?
That was the day our SEO scores on all the major search engines all spiked up after the new proxy server had been in effect for a few weeks.

I really am not making it up when I say our site traffic has DOUBLED in the last 2 weeks.

Ok, I shall wait and see which road Harris chooses to take.

Thank you for that much.
Brian and I are busy working on some new code for the forums that we "Hope" will offer you and other people like you a viable solution to the bandwidth consumption issues of the push video.
