2013 turbo pro seized rod bearing 1st ride of the year

2013 mtntk turbo pro, mtntk fix it kit installed, running 10 lbs 7500ft+ elevation, 50/50 91 non ethanol and av gas. Vipec ecu but didn't have it logging when it went down. No det light. Was running good to start with this was about an hour into the ride.
Ran great last year, 1st ride this year rod bearing seized to rod on crank end pro side. Pistons rotate freely on rods. Most debris is magnetic.

Any ideas what caused this?
Don't want it to happen again.

Rod bearing ... sounds like a lube problem... check for pinching of the oil lines from the tank etc.

Send it to Indy Dan for a full bottom end rebuild... heck, send him the whole engine... he may have one already for exchange.... ask him if he can set up your oil pump too and confirm operation.

Good luck.

It has a skidoo oil cap on it.

There is oil sitting in the case below the rod.

Very Sorry to see this. I'm curious about why you have a Vipec with the MTNTK Turbo? Not trying to stir the pot just sincerely curious?

Was your fuel fresh? Did you drain out last years fuel?

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

Detonation can knock the crap out of the rod bearings in these motors. I think you either deto'd the F out of it or like Eric said an oiling issue.

What kind of oil do you use?

How many miles since the top end was installed?

How long ago did you start using the BRP oil cap?

Summer storage? Indoors? Humidity?

Regardless, I'd make sure those fuel injectors get sonic cleaned and flow tested and a new fuel filter goes in. And chuck the Iridium's in the trash and run a BR9EYA plug.

Again, sorry to see this.

indoors pretty low humidity here

Given everything else looks good I'm guessing that it got moisture in it over the summer and let go first ride.

my buddy has a mtntk turbo on a 14 and has went through rod bearings in 2 consecutive seasons. they actually have an oil line "update" for their kit. It must hook the lines back up that you remove from the lower end when installing their kit. They claimed that there was no problem with their initial kit but i call bs. How can you take those lines off to the lower end and expect it to still get oiled properly?

anyway, this is something you might want to look into. I have no idea how you can come out with an "update" for your kit that could potentially save your customers from going through engines, and not let them know about it. Also they charge you 50 bucks for this kit which makes no sense to me.

Our turbo cost you 2 motors? That will be another 50 bucks to keep that from happening again. Seems like if your turbo was causing lower end oil issues the least you could do is send the update out for free.

I have the update kit sitting on the kitchen counter to go in with the next motor. $50 plus shipping.

Wow another $50, it's not like they are barely scraping by with the profit they make off these kits, I would be none too happy.

so sorry to hear this man. I had two different 2013 pro's and both lost bearings being bone stock other than clutching and cans. First one made it 1600ish miles and second one about 1450ish miles. Maybe I have bad luck, but I still wonder what causes it. My saving grace was both had warranty and hats off to my dealer who happened to have all the parts needed in stock and had me back out in 2 days on both instances.

Lower rod bearing failure is almost always a lube problem. Synthetic lubes are poor rust inhibitors. I've always ran Polaris gold in mine and even though I store sleds indoors, during engine tear downs my CFI engines always have had rust pitting in crank and have dry looking lower rod bearings. Changed practice last year going to Polaris gold in injector and Phillips Injex (best rust inhibiting oil avail) as light premix. Sled was just tore down for axys crank and pistons and there is zero rust pitting on crank or lower rod bearings this time. All of case and piston skirts have light film of protective oil. I have a good 2013 crank with less than 1 thousands tolerance if interested.

So they hook back up the original oil line to the rod bearings? And what line or lines go to the turbo?
I'm curious as my 15 has been having the same issue.

That's interesting. Have a 13 w/mtntk turbo and I know those crank oil lines are unhooked on mine. Haven't had any problems with it but also don't want to cause any problems if I could have spent a little bit for a "fix". Why not be proactive and just send the update out or at least notify customers a certain number of people have experienced said condition here's a free update?

The update kit is not free. I was charged $112 for 2 kits shipped. I have 2 sleds running their turbo kits.

Oh I definitely get it's not free, I'm just saying it'd be nice for them to notify customers and say we have an optional update available if you're interested. I'll be calling them today...

Had the same thing on happen on one. Mtn tek turbo kit. Two rod bearings went out as well. They told me there was no oiling problem with their kit and I didn't even know they had an update...interesting
