2013 Bulkhead & Tunnel Damage

Hi Guys, hit a rock while out in Laramie last week. See the pics for the damage. Sled has full coverage and is going to the dealer for a repair estimate later this week. I rode the sled the rest of the trip after some pounding and chiseling to keep the track from rubbing. Just wondering what you think the repair costs will be. I don't see them totaling it out but you never know.

Insurance company will probably total it.

They rarely want the liability of repaired "frame" damage-- this case the tunnel bulkhead.

It's a big job disassembling and reassembling the bulkhead and tunnel. A lot of hours goes into it.
 
Pretty sure a 13 with that kind of damage will be totaled.

Last year I had a 14 with some tunnel / bulkhead damage and it was very close to being totaled. In fact if it was a year older they would have.

Agree with Murph. Being a '13, they'll probably try to hose you on it. Maybe ask your ins. co if you can buy it back(if they do total it) and then consider parting it out. It's always a rodeo dealing with insurance claims, especially when it's a "total".

Thanks Guys. I'm going to start removing some of the items from the sled that I can. I will keep you updated.
 
A few years back totalled out a REV. the insurance company just gave me a check for the estimated value which ended up being a very fair number about 6K then I bought my sled back for 10% of thqt 6K value. Spent about $500 in fixes and rode it another 7500miles without issue.

So totaling it out isn't always a bad thing...
 
If it is just the bridge casting that took the bulk of the impact? It is less than a $100 for a new one. If it were mine I take the total money, buy the salvage rights from them and rebuild it myself, and then bank the rest of the $. FWIW
 
looks like only the bridge is damaged however to my best knowledge and experience the entire tunnel must be separated from the bulkhead in order to replace that bridge, that's a lot of work

I did not look at how the service manual suggests it be done, but IMO it could be done in an afternoon (4-6 Hours if mechanically inclined and Murphy does not try and help you). Here is how I would go about it. Remove both clutches, remove the left fender so the heat does not melt it. If the floor plate is bent and most likely is remove it entirely, remove the bolts holding the bridge to both the bulkhead and the front tunnel close off, as well as the engine mount bolts that go thru the damaged bridge. Warm the glue starting at the rear of the bridge and break it loose from the tunnel plate. Then warm the front of the bridge and pop it loose. sneak the damaged bridge out. Clean the areas to be glued, reapply glue and sneak the new one in and reinstall all the fasteners. Install new floor plate. Re-install the left fender. Re-install the clutches. Confirm belt alignment and condition of engine mounts. Ride it like you stole it, cause you just got an extremely cheap and easy spare sled!

Assuming they decided to total it out.
 
I recently did the tunnel swap, the gap to slip in the bridge is very tight, I cannot believe you can put the proper amount of glue on the bridge and slip it in
