CR500AF and Homebuilt Kit

I'm in the construction phase of my CR500AF with a self built snowbike kit. The Bike is a 1996 CR500R engine in a modified 2007 CRF250R chassis, I'm ready for the frame to go to the welder, then I can begin final assembly of the bike. The Main component of the snow kit showed up today, a new Ez-ryde 144" rear suspension that will be narrowed and possibly shortened to 121" or 136", I haven't decided on length yet. The 144" is the shortest that Ez-Ryde currently sells, so that's what I bought. Let the building begin. The plan is to route the "chaincase" chain and sprockets on the inside of the tunnel where it will be out of the way and won't need a cover. The brake is 6" diameter disc and will be on the track driveshaft at far right side with the caliper anchored to the inside of the tunnel. I'm trying to keep the weight as low as possible and the whole thing as simple as I can. All chain will be 520 o-ring and sprockets will be motorcycle type. The tunnel will have to be slightly wider than MH for chain clearance between tunnel and track but the kit should be narrower overall because chaincase cover is deleted. Well that's the plan anyhow. Now comes the work. This will be my second homebuilt kit. Last year's kit on my KTM 525sx worked well once I got the Skidoo chaincase issues figured out, but the chaincase is bulky, heavy and limits the gearing ratios to the Skidoo Safari sprockets and chains available. It used a Fast M-10 skid, picked for coil-over springs and ease of narrowing, it rides great, smoother than my friend's MH, but weighed more, had more rolling resistance, and the 90's color scheme of purple and yellow was less than impressive. Last year I didn't try to dress anything up I just want proved to myself that I could build a kit that performed well and didn't put me in the poor house, so this year I'm prepared to blow a little more cash and make it look more professional, but to hopefully still be far cheaper than buying a new MH. Wish me luck.

Apt smartcarb

I forgot to mention that this bike will be getting a cast 38mm APT Smartcarb, I'm hoping it shows up soon, I haven't heard anything since the email they sent saying it required more testing. Anyone else have an update?

Ha, this is so great. I actually thought that if you were to use a skid on the market today for a snowbike the ezryde would be the best one for it. I almost started the same project as you but decided to go a different route, Im all about reinventing the wheel. Im really interested to see how it turns out. I think you will have the smoothest most capable snow bike out if you can make it all fit together well. Also what track are you thinking to run and what ski.

friggen sweet project cant wait to see the finished product could you post some more pics of that tunnel you've got rigged up? subscribing to this post for sure

Project update

Finally got my 121 rails modified and installed. They are off a 2004 skidoo mxz, I trimmed off some extra material and slotted them for the Ez-ryde swingarm sliders. I'm having to run the real idler wheels only on the outboard of the rails since the rear of the swingarm and the rear idler wheel axle are too close together to put wheels between the rails. Not a big fan of having to do that, but my other option was going to a 136" track and rails and would lose some nimbleness. Alaska snow is nothing like Whistler BC so I don't need a long track. I guess if the 121 setup doesn't work, I can always go up in length and move the wheels inboard. Hopefully I'll be giving ride reports soon.

Project Update

Almost done, just one more shaft to turn on the lathe and it'll be ready for a test ride. Anxious to compare the CR500 2-stroke with this new kit to my KTM 525 4-stroke running the kit I built last year. Quick specs: 121x13.5x2 track, Ez-ryde modified to 121, all chains run inside of tunnel sides, and 10 tooth 2.52 pitch drivers for decreased rolling resistance. Still waiting on 38mm cast Smartcarb, hopefully soon.

Do you worry much about the bogey wheels being on the outside instead of the inside or the width of the track? If it were me, I think I would have gone with the new 129" track, trimmed it to 12.5 and put the wheels on the inside.

Looks awesome, can't wait to see how it works for you! Great fab skills!

Test ride #1

Test rode for the first time. Handles like a MH, didn't notice the 1 inch wider track, but I didn't get to ride much because of sprocket slipping on keyless bushings. Going to have to make a minor revision by going to a keyed shaft and sprockets on the jackshaft. The Fenner keyless bushings just aren't keeping the sprockets locked on the shaft under power. I'll post more pics and video once I get this glitch worked out. Thanks for the interest in my project.

Great project... must upload video!

Also... how do you have an aircraft hanger as your shop? Ive see na wing and a prop.... wtf? Lol
