2012 X 154 first ride report

I thought I would share how the first ride went and ask some questions along the way.

5-6500 feet. Clicker 3. Suspension setup like the dealer gave it to me. Bars tipped back a bit.

We rode for about 4 miles. Some trail some climbing. 40 degree snow condition with about 12-18 inches of soft snow.

Sled ran great right out of the box with the clicker setting about right on. Held RPM solid on the climbs after I babied the belt in for the first 10 miles.

The skis worked great in deep snow and sidehilling in fresh snow. I did experience noticeable ski push when turning around on harder packed wet snow. So bad at one point that I had to turn downhill for a spot that was not so hard. This was my first concern that I hope doesnt irritate down the road. Ski feel on the trail at speed was great and over all the front end feels light, nimble, and predictable. It was much better than my 09 and noticably different than the wifes 10 146.

On the wooped out trails it was awesome compared to the 10 146 as well.

Over the previous XP's it feels softer without bagging and bottoming out.

The engine power during breakin was great. It felt quite a bit better than the 10 I was comparing side by side with.

I did notice that after a couple second pull on the throttle the clutches were slow to release.

Clutch temps were cool. I couldnt fry an egg on them like my 09.

My next comment which is one of my real concerns was the vibration. With throttle over 2500 RPM its totally smooth. At idle its totally smooth. However, as the engine winds down back to idle there is a pretty wicked vibration just before it gets back to idle. This is very evident when comparing to the wifes 10. Any ideas? I hate to mess with a stock setup that is otherwise fine. It pulls smooth everywhere. The vibraion shakes the whole sled. I could post a video if anyone would like to see what Im talking about.

The track climbed like a goat. It might have just been the snow but it let me get into tight spots really slow on a sidehill with ample power to get it pointed and power out. Question: does anyone elses sound like a D8 dozer when free wheeling down hill? I tighted the tack up a bit because the dealer had about 3 inches of hang below the hifax. Tightening only changes the sound a bit. It was so loose I think I fet it ratchet a couple times.

Overal the handling what exactly what I like. It no longer flops down flat when carving an "S". It simply rolls through the flat postion onto the other side. Even my wifes 10 tends to flop to the standing position before you can pull it back over to the other side. Obviously snow conditions affect this. Down the trail you can ride the rails as well. ( I could do this on an 09 and 10 as well but it was noted to be "impossible" by reviewers on anything but a 12).

Just writing while Im thinking so dont comment on my spelling please!

hey,

just did 2 days back to back in 6ft bottomless on my 2012 146 x, feels so much better than my 09, better floatation, smoother, turns much easier, good power, track was working well, there was a few bogs here and there but we were riding in extremely deep conditions, all in all the best sled i've ridden out of the box,

agreed. I was presently surprised all around. I used to be timid dropping off the road and sidehilling above water on the 09 but it felt natural and safe on the 12. Lets you keep it pointed and jocky up when needed!

Another think I forgot to mention was that the gauge panel on the expensive X doesnt have the engine temp that I heard everyone talking about. Whats that all about? With the minimalistic handle bar controls we also lost the functionality of multiple heating settings on the grips. Would have been nice to get everything and more if possible.

You have to buy a temp module to let you see the temp on the screen, 100 bucks I think.

anything else come with that for a 100 bones? Freeking rediculous. YOu think 12 grand would buy you all the features. I wish I sold chit to BRP. Nope, lugnuts are seperate. $85 each and you need 20.

I have mine on and I cant say that would remove it becuase it handles awesome. I had the 09 removed because it needed it.

The 12 is great on and off the trail with the bar in. JMO.

Yea, it's kind of a scam. Your sled knows the engine temp and the other gauge info that you want and are used to having, but it's been programed not to share that info with you (the owner!) until you shell-out the extra $100 (beyond the $12K you've already spent) for the little plug-in module. All the module does is tell the on-board computer that NOW it's 'ok' to tell you what it already knows... Fortunately, this is/was (I know a guy with a SkiDoo Factory laptop!) one of the only complaints I've had so far with this fantastic machine (2011 X).

Agree with pretty much everything you say except the vibration. My 3 2012 ETECs all run really smooth. I definitely noticed the tank track noise you talk about. WHAT THE F**K is that I say? It is really noticeable going down hill slow. I was crawling under the tunnel with a light looking for the black streaks of track but it is NOT rubbing anywhere. Glad you heard it too. I think it is just the rubber of the track rubbing in the snow. BTW, love the 2.5 Powdermax. Performs better everywhere, even on the trail with packed snow. We are running with the bars hooked up and they sidehill MUCH better than the 2011 with the bars hooked up or off. We ran the 2011 sleds with the sway bar off all the time and the 2012s are way easier to roll up in a sidehill. I second guessed my decision to upgrade and snow check the 2012 when my 2011s were still in excellent condition but am glad I did now.

the funny thing about the vibe is that it only shakes when coming off RPM. Never during throttle. I think it must be engine action. It makes me nervous but I dont want to pull the clutches for nothing. Does the tank track feel go away?

I've got 5-6 days on mine already and it hasn't gone away for me, now that I KNOW there is nothing wrong I can ignore it.

While riding last night I checked the RPM where I getting the shake. I idle smooth at 1150RPM and under a very light throttle sqeeze I get a good shake at exactly 2000 RPM. It goes away about 150RPM over that and below it. Cans someone else run theres at that RPM and report on any additional shake? Its a bit more than my wifes 10XP. I have an MBRP can on the way and I wonder if that will change it all. Could be just engine dynamics but I want this thing to be perfect.

During the ride I did a few hard pulls from slow speed while leaning back. Pretty awesome to walk the sled out in full wheely stock. The rest of the group is openly jealous. Which is what I was going for. Bragging rights.

From 11 to 12 isn't the track the only chassis difference??
