2010 dragon 800 w/50 miles piston pics

Here are some pictures of my sleds pistons. It has been ran stock. I took the y-pipe off and was getting ready to install an SLP single pipe set and decided to take some pics of the pistons so you guys can tell me what you think I should do. The sled ran flawless.
Thanks,
Brandon

Uhm, I think that qualifies as scuffing?? I hope that is wrong otherwise this could get ugly agian! Good luck man!

OK, I don't like the look of that, but that's just me. ;)
Apparently the mystery of the disappearing coating is considered normal on Polaris pistons. It isn't the same coating other manufactures use I can tell you that. This stuff is almost like some kind of rubberized film. Regardless, I don't think it should be wearing off within 50 miles.
I have a hard time with pics. It looks like the coating is flaking off, but I don't think you have any scoring. Can you actually feel any ridges in the metal?
What do the rest of you think? Normal or not?

Load it up and take it back so they can pull it apart, I'm betting the intake side looks the same. I'd like to see the rings if you can get a picture.

Are the lines visible on the piston actual grooves? I.E. can you feel them if you ever so lightly slide a nail along the surface of the piston? If not, I'd run it a while and take a look after a hundred more miles or so.

My 700 dragon pistons looked like that at around 100 miles when I went to put my slp pipe on. there is 1800 on it now and they are no worse, and it has good compression. Let the dealer know, they probably won't do anything because more then likley the compression is good if it running fine, and they will probably only do a compression test. But if they log it and something does go, it is easier to get warranty.

Thanks for the quick replies guys... I'll go out and feel the skirts with my nail and take a pic or two of the rings. I'll have the pics up within the hour

Mine looked the same after 100 miles. Keep running it. 500 miles now and it runs strong. As long as you cant feel them the dealer said it is OK.

I can't feel them with my fingernail... feels pretty smooth. Should I put the stock exhaust back on or put the SLP pipe kit on? Here's some pics of the rings... they look good.

Put the pipe on and ride it. Mine runs like a rocket. I think a lot of people would rather sit around and ***** and moan about polaris than actually go riding.

I think its the coating on them just wearin in, make sure your airbox isn't suckin in any belt dust,I'd put on the pipe and let her run.

That's interesting. Mine was scored on the exhaust side, (08 mind you) But my dealer said the caoting on the intake side on mine was also flaking. Yours isn't the only one. But I would like to know why they are doing this. Not normal.

With the flash, it's hard to tell on the first pics, the glare could make it look worse than it really is. The second set look fine. There is a gray coating on polaris pistons that wears off as the motor breaks in. We're all paranoid now.:(

Looking at it closer, it just seems as if the coating is just wearing off. I am going to go ahead and install the pipe this weekend. Let me know if any of you want more or different pics before I put it together.

That coating must be a few tenths of a thou thick? I would run it and with the new pipe and just make sure the dealer documents it!
Mike

I'll tell you the same thing an old friend of mine told me many yeard ago when I was still riding a JD Liquifire and lost a rear shock. "Get on the SOB and ride it". It looks fine and normal to me. Quit being paranoid and beat on it and have a good season. Break it in the way you are going to use it.

Mine looked the same with about 25 miles on it, I posted some stuff in the update thread about it. I took mine to the dealer and they said it was normal and to run it, my instincts were telling me otherwise but I guess its under warranty. I have put about 75 more miles with no problems so far other than will not pull rpm's no matter the clutching setup. I can only get around 8000 rpm's out of it. The new coating must be totally different from the grafal coating used on the old elko pistons in the big block 800's, that coating took 1000 miles or more before it started to wear off.
