2010/2011 Clutch Spider Breakage Poll

Have you broken a spider in a 2010/2011 M sled?

I see the part # for the primary clutch has been superceded twice since last year I wonder if the latest one comes with the exploding spider feature??:face-icon-small-dis

Mine broke today in epic powder. Does anybody know if 09 is different?

My 09 M8 has broke one spider and I have lost one roller. Thats two clutchs I have had go bad on my 09. I installed the Supreme Tool Inc spider a couple rides ago and so far no issues.

I think the clutchs just cant stand the HP these sleds put out mainly the 2010 and 2011. My 09 has the SLP stage 3 set up so it should be close in hp as the new sleds. My 07 M8 has also gone through three clutchs and I have the RKT porting and head on it. Again more hp then stock. Just a thought

How are the turbo sled clutchs holding up?

just broke mine today. 2010 m8 with 1500 miles on it. just exploded!!! real nice. didn't know nothing about it being a problem until i started looking on the forum and seems i sure aint the only one.

un harmonious

cats problems started when they changed their crank design or shall we say crank mass and at the same time their DD drive, the harmonics of the 05-08 sleds changed for sure with the 010 011 engines and different reverse. 250 hp won't hurt those clutch's, but 10 minutes of bad vibration will flatten rollers, break spyders, ruin wieghts. Swapping clutch brands has been going on for years with some hit and miss success. Some rotary valve doo's would devour cat and po clutch's. how many aftermarket companies have tried to sell us harmonic balancers to save our clutch's, wow did those products disappear fast. Cat has a problem, bet they been burning lots of extra hours in their sound lab chasing this problem.

buy a 2012, crap shoot ???, new motor mounts, different efi calibration, different feedback from new drive system, could be nirvana or hell ?

clutches

Have appr 6500 miles on 2 m7's and a 07 m8 not one clutch problem! I blow them out with compressed air after each ride, no complaints.

I think that you have a good point there.^^^^^ My buddies that exploded was full of belt dust and this belt hair. It looks like insulation from either the hood and or the inside of his side panel.

Im gonna knock on some wood right now, but I clean the SH-T out of my primary and check deflection after every ride and so far so good.

Anyway you look at this, it sucks donkey c0ck!!!

Not a 2010 but a NEW spider. About 200 miles on it.

2 broken spiders

My buddy broke his spider on Tuesday 1200 miles on 2010 m8 162. He cracked all three of the "arms" out from the center to the rollers. I broke mine on Thursday 483 miles on 2011 M8 153. I broke a chunk out of mine right where the roller is and then that "arm" cracked back to the center. Both sleds were running Yellow/white springs with 65 gram weights. Both sleds are bone stock. No pipes, cans or clutch mods.

Cat has a problem:face-icon-small-dis

Broke mine yesterday on 2011 LE at 700 miles. Good thing I had brought a second sled for a buddy to ride who Didnt show.

i voted to soon as well my clutch wasnt hitting rpm was only hitting 7800, took cover off guess what i find, cracked spider right at shaft, rollers dont roll, weights have flat spots on them and my bushing for my outter sheave is right finish, i can move it back and forth almost a quarter inch when the clutch is open.

not good since we just got a load of snow.

I voted too soon as well. I had mine explode on Saturday late afternoon in Rabbit Ears. No parts to fix it and I had to leave it on the mountain over night. Worst part was missing out on epic pow on Sunday cause I had no parts to rebuild mine.

Im so dissappointed with this issue, oh and my buddy gave me a nice 20 mile 2 up ride out one way of the mountain on his XP. He didn't let my forget that.

And, a big thank you to the the guy that owns Action Power Sports in Peoria. Thanks for the extra horse power on getting my blown clutch off. It was definately a 3 man job!!! What a crappy deal!!!!!!!!!

Has anybody wrote a letter to someone at cat for this issue??? Im gonna call my dealer and get some names that I can write to.

Hey, I was just reading this thread and had a thought. The sleds on here are all M's, with a few x-fire's in there as well, which makes sense here on Snowest since it's mainly mountain riders.

On other forums that are more flatlander oriented I haven't seen this issue mentioned even though people tend to put more miles on in the flatlands.

Is it possible that the mountain clutching setup may have something to do with it? Don't guys generally run lighter weights at elevation? Could that have something to do with it?

I don't really know, just spitballing and brainstorming here. Just wondering why I'm not hearing more about this from the flatland crowd.

I don't think that thats the issue, because my friends broke with flatland weights in. I think that it is just a bad batch of spiders. Either way there has to be a better solution than just throwing another cat clutch on. And, I really don't feel like shelling out 1G for the P85 conversion. Has anybody tried the cat primary with a supreme tool billet spider???? If so, how is it holding up???

A couple reasons: higher sustained loads on the drivetrain, more erratic and sometimes aggressive throttle inputs causing the drivetrain to upshift and backshift more often and most importantly typically slower ground speeds with way less airflow under the hood.

in a nutshell: 35-40mph(or less) , snow covered vents, deep heavy snow uphill and aggressive on/off throttle riding = hot abused clutches.
