2009 M8 Clutch failure/recall notice

Most of us got a recall from Cat about a month ago for a recall on the secondary. I believe the part replacement is simply the 'washer-spacer' that goes between the secondary sheaves and the 10 bolts for helix.

My buds secondary failed on the last ride and presumed it was this washer. However, when we tore it apart. that washer between them was fine. It's like the inside of inside sheave started to deteriorate and the shiny collar on teh sheave is all gouged up. So when the clutch worked apart, it would catch and grind.

One, has anyone had a secondary failure from the 'recall' from Cat?

two, has anyone had this type of failure or know what caused it?

Sorry, if its been hashed out before, couldn't find a post on search.

The new spacer is thicker than the one it came with. Your friend will probably need a new secondary.

I haven't heard anything either?

Are you supposed to get a letter in the mail or what?

I have about 500 miles on mine haven't had any trouble yet. Had the secondary apart a few times and haven't noticed anything.

Exactly what is happening with the spacer?

recall was only for certain numbers of production. Shoulda got a letter if affected.

Guess I still don't understand how this "washer" could fail.... He's obviously getting a new secondary,,, if it ever comes.....but when we tore it apart, there wasn't any failure or washer wasn't comprimised. I need a lesson on "clutching 101" on this particular problem!! LOL

My driven clutch on my 2010 HRC just failed with 250 miles. It looks as if the sheaves were grinding together near the spacer you guys are talking about. The moveable sheave bearing is toast (serious play) and the movable sheave was binding causing the R's to fall off on top end....

UH OH...
Better check mine out. Last couple rides I seem to be down about 150 rpm's, and also just fragged a belt for no reason too. 700 miles and no belt issues, then all the sudden brappp. Chunks.

I know the problem. IF you look at that gold ring your talking about this is in there to really center the helix and hold the black bearing in. If the center of this ring is to big the bearing in the inner sheave can slide over to the out side of the sled. Then the leverage on the helix lets the inner side of the secondary dig into the bearing slide surface. IF this happens you can have it fixed but it is usless untill it is fixed.

The new bearing is made bigger. Freeze the bearing and set the sheave near a warm fire place. Pop in the new bearing. Now take the two parts to a machine shop and have them mill the bearing slide surface that got ***** nice a smooth. The have them mill down the inner side of the bearing till it just fits tight. There is some break in time but you have a brand new if not better than brand new clutch.

Then get three number 10 by 3/4 dowel pins drill out the helix with a tight fitting drill bit and only use six harden bolts to hold it in. These pins will center the helix end bearing with the inner bearing. You then are not relying on the gold ring to do this. NEVER run the secondary with out this gold ring or you will have a dinked clutch in no time.

I have two cut 10" to 10.4" secondarys with brass bearings if any one is interested. One is broke in. Dowel pins included.

Don.

Don-

My '09 has a thin silver spacer rather than the gold spacer my '06 had. The gold spacer is thicker. This new spacer being thinner is what is causing the two sheaves to contact each other, correct?

Also, it sound like you recommend ditching the AC helix screws for a hardened screw?

Thanks.

Could someone post picts, I've had my secondary apart on my 09 several times and have not seen what you folks are talking about. Thanks

It was only on HCR's

The early built 09 HCRs had a recall on secondary clutches only.
