last weekend my friends 08 summit started to eat coolant and run very poor in the low end and smel like burning coolant from the exhaust.
sled has about 1200miles on it.
checked the head gaskets and they are ok but will be replacing them...
naturally i figured the only other thing it could be was the base gasket or crack in the block.
i looked for cracks and did not see anything but the base gasket was in very rough shape and very posssible that is the problem but i have no way to prove this and i dont really feel like reasembling it not being 100% sure.
one piston is in perfect condition and the other has a a section on it with some good scarring.....im wondering if this si where coolant was entering and washing the lubricant from the piston?
i filled the water jackets up with coolant and waited to see if the bottom end would fill with coolant. it checked out ok is this good enough of a test for the bottom end?
since there had been coolant in the bottom end i am worried about the bearings before i put new pistons and gaskets back on.
should i put some oil in the bottom end to help the bearings since they may have lost there lubrication from the coolant passing by?
do you guys set the base gasket on the clylinder before installation or on the block? i hear these like to snag on reasembely.
the cylinders look awesome and there are no gouges or scars on the inside do these need to be honed or...?
do you guys use a tool for piston clip installation? i never have on any other sleds but its very tight in there and wondering if there is an easier way.
the other thing i noticed is a small amount of white dust on the inside of the reed boots....is it possible the heated carbs are leaking coolant for the motor to eat?
the valve was off and it used a large amount of coolant so i dont see how this is possible?
can coolant even enter the fuel stream from the coolant passages in the carbs?
thanks!!!!
