2008 RMK 600 starter rope will not catch when hot.

My uncle has a 2008 rmk 600 144. When its hot the starter rope will not catch/engage. The rope just pulls out freely and then recoils but doesnt turn over the motor. After the the sled cools then it works just fine. Its a real pain in the butt. The dealer tried to fix it a while ago with no luck. Any help would be great. Thanks Terry G

you could start by removing your recoil assembly and checking it for internal damage and ensure the spring is fine but be careful they can unwind VERY fast. I had fun rewinding my recoil spring last time i service my pull start.

My wife's '06 600 does the same thing. I have torn it apart and cleaned it and regreased the dawg with a pretty light grease thinking that a thicker grease wouldn't allow it to pop out. All of it looks good to me yet it still acts up every now and then. Usually when she is about to give it a big pull.

The problem is to much lube under the engagement dog/paw cover. There has to be some friction for it to work. When the grease heats up it gets more slippery and dog/paw will not engage. Remove center nut clean most of the grease out and try it. Reassemble starter. With recoil off pull the rope slowly dog/paw cover should not move at first but dog/paw should throw then drive cover.
