2008 m1000 electronic reverse - verdict

So for the folks that have completed the conversion, what's the long term results on the 2008 m1000 electric reverse conversion? Any downside? Any tips or learnings come from doing it? Does swapping the 09 and newer oil pump solve the no oil while in reverse issue? Not interested in the oil delete at this point. Thanks in advanve for any insight.

the 09 pump solves it but I know a few that didn't worry about it because they rarely use reverse and not for very long, haven't heard of any problems. But you do have to change out the helix to a 09 style.

I'm confused...

.

I'm confused (nothing new for me)...

I have an '08 M1000, and it has electronic reverse stock...

are there '08 m1000s that didn't have reverse..??..

Thanks...

Your 08 has mechanical reverse (unless someone changed it already) the 09 and newer m series have an electric reverese that spins the motor backwords. The 08 and older sleds use a reverse gear set to accomplish this. Thus being the reason you can drop about 8ish lbs by installing an 09 or newer drive
.

This will be my first season on the engine reverse conversion, I guess we'll see how it goes.....I do plan on putting in the 09 oil pump just for a little piece if mind. For me, it's not so much the weight savings that I'm interested in, but the reliability of the drive; IMO the "mechanical reverse-less" drives are much less prone to failure (with the bearing upgrade) than those with all the extra moving parts that tend to grenade these things right when the dumping of the season happens....

Ah... got it...

I thought that mechanical reverse had a shifter... I just push the button... but I see now... electronic vs mechanical...

Thanks..!!..

I`m with you. Weight loss is just gravy IMO .... although it does add up to 11lbs if you go to BDX lite. Nothing to sneeze at. Contrary to what other have stated, it is not all rotating, I would guess about 25% rotating. There is a lot of parts in the reverse diamond drive that do not rotate.

no question about it, the non reverse drive is much more reliable than the mechanical reverse drive. Most often the non-reverse drive bearing issue is only discovered because the case is opened up and someone is looking for that bearing issue. On the other hand the failures in the mechanical reverse drive often stop the sled in the mountains creating a real hassle. If you can keep it moving much more destruction occurs by the time you get it back to the truck. If you want to find something wrong in a mechanical reverse dd you can open it about any time and find issues even though it is still operating ok (especailly 1000cc) Disclaimer: some people have had good luck and high miles on the reverse dd.

I have 2400 miles on my sled with stock oil pump and have had no issues.

Thanks,

I am assuming you only use it sporatically (eg unloading, backing out of garage, etc).

... and the conversion is as easy as its looks? As for the pin you need to buy to plug into connection, I am assuming there are different sizes? Do you know the size/type off hand? Is there a trade name for it? Forgive me if these are dumb questions but I do not have alot of experience in electronics.

if you have a Radio Shack nearby, they have the stuff you would need most likely; I used a female pin set that comes in kit that is used to make a VGA connector for a computer; just rummage through some of their bins in the store. Also, John Deere uses these same pins in all of their OEM electronics. Suppose you could get some from Cat? Tried that route (from the Cat dealer) up here and just got a deer-in-the-headlight look, guy had no idea what i was talking about and said that what I was trying to do wasn't possible. :face-icon-small-dis

From there its pretty straight forward....just crimp the pin on the wire (and solder if you have some handy) insert in the connector, lock the connector in, and plug it in into the ECM. Rope and go!

2008 M1000

Hey I have a 2008 M1000 and if im not having any problems with the reverse should i be worried about converting it?? The only time that I really use it is backing it off the trailer, backing it out of my shop, or backing up if i dont want to go a certain way.

I just gone done doing this to my sled. But my reverse light and beeper doesn't work. Did I miss something or wont it work now? Is their a way to get it to work?

Its mostly just for people who want to shed a few lbs by switching out to the newer style DD. If you are happy with what you have i would not worry about it, Had 1500 miles on my stock 08 DD with no probs (I use amsoil).
