2008 arctic cat M8 hood melting on SLP pipe set up

hood heat

yes i removed ALL foam from under the hood and put heat tape on the left side of the hood where it is closest to the pipe and also on the air intake aswell i noticed it was getting a bit warm up there and no she runs like a BUTE thanks for the helps guys AND YES ITS WORTH YOUR MONEY GO CAT!!

im running an 08 m8 s/p with timbersled intake, slp y pipe, pipe and can with custom ceramic coating, gutted my hood out and trimmed tabs... 2 screen digitron with attitude fuel controller and there is nooo bog anywhere :) runs like a bat outta hell and im pulling further than new m1's with pipe kit.... i do have titanium a-arms and lightweight bushing kit, custom seat, v-force 3's, hot air elim. kit and running on 70g weights at 8000ft...pulling 8150rpms
im a pretty light guy at 155lbs so i figure with my weight and weight dropped off the sled im ALOT lighter than most riders, but i have nooo heat tape on my hood yet, by spring ill tape it up but no melting issues and my 8 runs like a dream :D.... by june she'll be back in the shop for a turbo!!!!:D

I think that venting might be the key to alot of the problems here. That is one of the first things that I did to my sled. I didn't wait for it to start.

we offer a simple hood lift that gives more clearance for poor fitting pipes and also rids the engine compartment of unwanted heat.. Works extremely well!!!

Big Red I am with you on this. I have the AMP Gauge Cage on my sled and of course run the BD-X intake. There is so much heat coming out of the speedo hole I can't imagine an intake without some type of block off for the under hood heat. Granted the heat is rising but still I wonder about intakes breathing under hood hot air.

The stock Intake has an opening to pull underhood hot air at the top of the hood. It is on the back side and is only exposed when you remove the ducting under the hood. The BDX intake or the CPC with the shelf work the best. I am running the BDX Intake with two bulls eyes in the shelf to mix a little warm air into the intake. I think it is needed here in alaska were the outside temps are around 0f most of the riding season. My M8 would bog at low rpm with the stock intake, the BDX fixed it and the sled runs better over all.

After going to another dealer to gut out the intake with slp horn and installing a BDX intake and a 40/36P helix my sled now feels the power of the pipe. The weight and heat loss make it more worth it. And the bottom comes alive with helix.

So with the proper application of heat tape, venting and intake modification (BDX, Sno Pro, Speed Werx) the SLP pipe is worthwhile?

I am a little spooked about running a SLP pipe with a BDX air intake without a controller but, that's the way I'd want to set my sled up.

A little note here...
I checked my plugs the other day(2008 M8 with the SLP setup, and that's it :no box)

You would more than likely be fine to go with the intake and not use a fuel box, my plugs were pretty well.... soaked? In fuel.

The only way to get the full gains out of this pipe we have, is to sport the fuel box.... Willy at Chunk Motorsports (calgary) said that there's a few coming out in the summer that aren't plug and play... just hook it up and I suppose it's the settings that seem to work, right there already.

i just put the slp pipe combo on mine and just by lookin at it is really really close to the belt side power valve cable it kinda looks like the pipe is so close almost like it is sitting on it.. i tried to turn the top of that i turned it but still pretty dang close i taped it just wondering if anyone is having this problem..

SLP pipe clearance to exhaust valve

My SLP pipe is very close to the exhaust valve also. I just taped the valve and caple with heat tape and no problem. I also made sure the insulating wrap that came on the pipe (under the big ring clamp) is between the exhaust valve and the pipe.

I installed a 1/4" shim under the pipe rest on top of the rubber stop. It gave me the clearence that I felt it was lacking.

Can someone please post pictures of where they are melting there hoods? I am thinking about an SLP single and am curious of where they are melting

No melting here

I have the full SLP exhaust, intake and vents on my 07 M8. I re-clipped the hood as specified in the instructions, pulled all of the hood foam and re-taped the hood. No melting. I believe in keeping it as cool as possible with as much airflow in and out of the motor. I ride high elevation in deep snow, northern UT.
