2008 - 700 RMK Oil usage

I've owned this sled since new and it now has 5700 KMS on it. When it was new and for the first 4500 KMS it would use about one litre of oil per 110 KM ride. It started using more and now it uses 2.5 litre and almost emptied the entire tank one one day. I used 45 litres of fuel and 2.5 litres of oil. The low oil light was on all the way down the trail and we are now at the point of having to take an extra litre of oil up the hill. I just got the top end replaced and asked the dealer to adjust the pump. It still uses the same amount of oil. Anyone have any idea's? Is the oil pump finished and can it be adjusted?

Thanks

my rmk uses alot, not that much. mine was leaking around the plug where the low oil sensor was, cut the tie wrap off and installed a hose clamp.

You're at 18: 1 now, 55:1 to 60: 1 is where my 2007 D7 has been at for the last 4000 miles (6400 KM)

1 1/4 to 1-1/2 turns on the 10mm adjuster nuts = approx 20 points

soon your sled I would try going (2) FULL turns, and re-check after that.

If you're unsure, add approx a half litre of oil to a full tank of fuel until you've ridden enough miles to verify that the ratio is where you want to be at

Hope this helps

I looked at your thread on the oil pump adjustment. How do you adjust it without pulling the motor completely out of the sled. Can it be done? Can you replace the oil pump without removing the engine? If you have to remove the engine, how many hours of shop time does that involve? I'm NOT a mechanic.

I appreciate the advice. Thanks.

Engine stays in, I had mine out for other reasons.

It's a real P.I.T.A., but if you remove the gas tank, it's much easier.

As slash pointed out above, check to see if your oil pump arm is returning/moving with the cable

Some guys have installed a return spring onto the pump arm.

I seriously doubt your oil pump has failed

There is some good evidence on this forum that actually supports doing the opposite on the CFI's by turning up your oil consumption to around 40:1 AND running premix as well for improved longevity/performance of the fuel system/engine...

That "band-aid" PRE-MIX your 2008 and newer sled (like your 1986 YAMAHA SRX) over-oiling advice is intended for the piston breaking, skirt breaking 800's

NOT the 700's as the O/P asked about

I thought it was for ridding misquitoes during summer-time barbeques?

Just another perspective I found interesting....don't kill the messenger...Just because you do that doesn't mean its GOSPEL although I have utilized some of your other tips with success:face-icon-small-coo

Wasn't loading the shotgun for anyone, just wanted to clarify the facts. A lot of times these threads get off track, and lose sight/focus of what the O/P asked about

Glad I could help with my other info.

Let's look an INDY Dan's fix and MTNTK for the 800's.

Both of these guys see a lot more engines torn apart than we ever will.

Both address piston issues, not lack of oil
