2006 900 RMK only goes WOT

Bought a 06 900 RMK last Feb. to take out west for one week at the end of March. Had some issues.

It has SLP pipe and air box. Clutched for 10,000ft.

After March trip got it back home to the flat lands, put it in the corner, covered it and got the lawn tractor out.

Hoping to go back west in Jan, figure I better get it out of the corner and work on it.

Here's what it was doing.

First two days it ran "good". 20 degrees.

3rd day it started having "throttle response" issues. 30 degrees

4th day I'm getting pissed lol. 30-35 degrees

Last day, 40 degrees, it would start and idle fine, but it wouldn't go unless you went WOT. anything less it would just sit there and labor. it wouldn't die, it just wouldn't go. We were playing in the trees and it just became un-ridable.

I cut the day short and came down the mountain, WOT-coast-WOT-coast.

I miss my carb sled.

Anyway looking for a place to start, I did see an engine light flash a few times, haven't had it to the dealer for codes.

Thanks for any help sent my way

Not an expert opinion, but I would check the TPS. I'm not sure if you need the tool it suggests, or if there's a "homemade" tester. I don't know much about the CFI TPS, however on the Edge TPS' you can unplug them and it should run correctly.

Check your trouble codes first, especially if its blinking.
That'd be the place to start.

How to Build a TPS tester

If I'm not mistaken there is a tps pigtail update for this sled. I had to do my 05 last year and it runs great now. Also check the wring harness for any bare wires, a lot of chafing from what I have seen because of how things are routed and you can make a tps tool pretty easy and. Cheap. Read the stickies at the top. Mucho Grande info there

thanks

Thanks everyone for the info.

Going to take it to the dealer and see what codes they can pull, pay them for an hour or two and see what they can find.

My gut is telling me bad TPS but at $166 I'd kind of like to be sure.

Don't waste your money on the dealer, start it up and count the codes.....refer to the chart and then decide.
Maybe its just a simple TPS adjustment, not replacement.

You have a wealth of knowledge here with past and present 05-06 700/900 owners.

Could also be bad wiring at the connector to the tps, all quick and easy checks that can be made before going to the dealer.

Thanks

Well that's an issue, I saw the light flash a few times when I was having problems last season on the mountain, but now when I run it here on a stand in the garage no engine light.

Starts up and runs fine on the stand, can't ride it yet, wont be anything to ride on here in the midwest until January.

Looked at the plug to the TPS looks good, I doubt a TPS adjustment, from what I've read here it seams like that goes more towards idle at a given elevation, mine starts and idles fine. I've read that some guys have found that the TPS get's a dead spot in the range of travel, that sounds more like what could cause my problem.

So if my sled isn't flashing the engine light anymore does that mean there are no codes stored. Will the dealers digital wrench not be able to pull anything off the OBC?

Update incase anyone is interested.

Decided not to take it to the dealer.

Found broken red/white wire going into the TPS plug. Ordering TPS pig tail 2203165

Also found bunged up oil pump cable, ordering new cable X-937 from Motion Pro

Betting broken wire is my drivability problem.

Thanks for everyone's help

depends..sometimes the sled wont trhow a code unless there is a load on the system (riding)...but depends on the code...most wont clear without being ridden a little as well.

this is EXACTLY why you cannot diagnose the TPS harness just by looking at it, the wires break inside the insualtion and at the connection point to the plug. Trust us, if we reccommend the TPS harness, and 90% of TPS adjustment being an issue...it usually always is..

you STILL need to adjust the TPS...trust me, its off.

good work so far..keep it up and youll be on the snow ripping in no time

Acting up 2005 900

My 2005 900 acts similar, idles good.

Mid range it stutters and acts like a 100cc Hodaka dirt bike.

Full throttle it runs great. I guess I have just learned to ride it like that.

I did adjust the the TPS last year, on the bench as per forum instructions.

No Codes.

I have not Replaced the Pigtail in question.
