2006 900 neeeeeedddd help

i have a 2006 900... it has 800 miles. ive had two motors already im on the third.. nowww... engine light comes on and dies. wait 5 minutes starts rins for about 2 miles dies and so on. i have replaced every electronic on this thing... has anyone had this problem?

does it run fine when cold, runs for about 5 mins or so...check engine light flashes and dies? Count the number of times the engine light flashes. Mine did this and it turned out to be the stator. The stator even tested fine and showed no codes at the dealer, I changed the stator and eveything has been great.

yes runs great cold... doesnt do it in elevation but in the hills... it takes about 3 miles on the road to do it... thank you for your help. the polaris dealer threw there hands up at it..

hahaha well brand new 51 miles motor blew the crank factory default... 230 miles new motor top end came apart.... 600 miles after taking to the polaris dealer{my old one} they didnt put gear oil in the chain case...oooppsss was'nt quite a full service.

it has a brand new computer.. all new sensors exhust temp sensors oil sensors and so on..

have not tried stator yet..

sometimes the engine light flashes 3-5 times others stay on for approx 5 min then dies..

5-10 minutes later starts up runs great then dies

3 flash code is air intake temp sensor. This sensor's ground is on the same ground circuit as the exhaust temp sensor is on. If you're getting a 3 flash code after ehaust temp sensor replacement, then you might want to change the air intake sensor and check the wiring very closely between these 2 sensors and backprobe to the ECM.

Air intake sensor failure is common in our group. I would start there before I replaced the stator.

Are you saying that a bad air temp switch will make the sled stall and unable to start?

My air temperature wire broke one weekend...got the flash code...the machine would still run, but really rich and would foul plugs like crazy. then it would not start until i changed them. My guess is still stator, mine ran the exact same way. run cool untill hot, die and would not start until cold again....but double check before you spend the $500 on a stator.

there are several stators on ebay, unfortunately there is no way to tell if they are good or not.

Here we go again.

What is your problem markoo? I'm at a loss where your beef stems from.

Where did I say
that a bad air temp switch will make the sled stall and unable to start?
??

Air temp switch?

Are you saying this sled has an air temp switch?

Since you seem to need things spelled out in elementary english, I will elaborate on my previous response. In the automotive world of engine and transmission driveability, runnability, and computer diagnosis, trouble (fault) code repairs are ALWAYS diagnoised and repaired BEFORE anything else.

If you read and comprehend the original complaint,

... engine light comes on and dies

The engine light indicates a trouble (fault) code has occurred.

Bottom line: this sled may very well indeed have 2 problems. However, these kind of issues can lead one down a slippery slope when certain steps of properly diagnoising a complaint are skipped.

Markoo: If you want to debate me with what an air temp SENSOR does or anything else, then please pm me so we don't contaminate this thread. I'd be interested in hearing from you what effect if any, does the air intake sensor while sharing the same ground circuit as the exhaust temp sensor have on the ECM (ECU) in th 900.

Wyldchylde said his sled will run afew miles and then quit. After 5 mins. it will start up and do the same thing. You said it could be a faulty air temp sensor. My question was will a faulty air temp sensor make the sled quit. I don't get what your problem is. Just trying to help out wyldchylde here. You should learn to relax a little.

I almost hate to get into this one, but when my wire broke on the air temp sensor, I did not notice what the problem was. I did not have the code chart with me and I was 65 miles in bfn. the sled ran fine as long as I didn't open it up. so I think the sled will run with a bad air sensor. just my experience.

First off, it doesn't matter if it will make the sled quit or not. The check engine light coming on first is what MUST be addresed first. Nothing else matters at this point.

Second. Is it possible that a faulty air temp sensor/exhaust temp sensor circuit kill the engine? Anything is possible in a computer controlled system and would be dependent on the type of failure in that circuit and what the ECM is reading at that moment, what it thinks it's reading and what it is programmed and not programmed to command at the time of such interuption.

SwitchbackRick told us what his symptom was when his went bad. EricBigbore's sled wouldn't run when his was bad. Mine ran fine and just turned on the check engine light. Reason mine ran ok is the resistance (ohms reading) was barely over the threshold of acceptable temp readings. And my buddy is having a 3 and 5 code with his right now. ATS has been ordered.

The resistance changes in these sensors as temperature changes. The ECM monitors this and is programmed what to do based on these inputs. When these inputs become compromised, the outputs aren't always correct. If a circuit gets shorted to ground, the outputs can really screw up.
