2005 Ford F-150

This question is for a friend of mine (No, this is not one of those "I have this friend with this rash..." deals)
He's about to pull the trigger on a 2005 F-150 crew cab with the 4.6 in it. He's always been a GM guy before this. Other than it being underpowered (just my opinion), are there any major problem areas on these trucks that he should be on the look out for?
As always, thanks for your help.

you are right about the power .......or the lack of. if he plans to tow with it he will be very dissapointed. other than that they are nice rigs
my .02

4.6

THe truck is a very fine choice in my opinion, but the 4.6 is a very under powered power plant tell him to keep his eyes open for a 5.4 3valve motor much better in the power dept. He is probaly getting a smokin deal on that one because they are having problems selling it with that motor in it. I work at a ford dealer and we very rarely see f-150 in for any problems, Besides changing spark plugs.

Seen a fair share of rotors warped. And ticking noise from (typically) the right front head. The repair for that ticking noise is about $1200.

I gots the ticking noice in my 99 5.4 with 273,000 miles on it. Dont plan to fix it either. Been a damn good truck.

I would definitely buy another 5.4L. As for the 4 liter......well......I wouldnt because it doesnt suit my needs

i have the 5.4...i would not get the 4.6 no power and does not get any better gas mileage in the cc

Had lots of Ferd company trucks with the Triton motors. Only had one that had a couple bad injectors when it was pretty new, otherwise they all ran like a top.
4.6L is gutless and won't get any better mileage than the 5.4L, but it'll run forever, even keeping it wound up in 2nd gear towing. Change the spark plugs if they're original. One of my foreman with a 4.6L just had a spark plug break off and trash his engine at 70k mi.
If he's not worried about the power, it's a good choice IMO.

Not sure if it applies to that year of vehicle but some of the ford gas powered trucks had an issue with the cruise control starting a fire. probably already taken care of but might double check.

It will get better milage if you drive nice Ive seen 21 MPG. But thats driving speed limit and no wind. But for the most part you are talk 1 MPG better. I get 14-15 MPG town driveing. My 2002 got 12-13 MPG. I was worried about the 4.6 but pretty happy cause it was a good deal. All I ever tow is a two place or my sled in the back. SO far happy with my purchase no problems 5 years 38000 miles and counting.

I have an F-150 04 Crew cab with the 4.6 and it pulls my 25' camper just fine. Also pull my 2 place with sleds with no problem. I love it.

Put about 30K miles on an 06 F-150 ext cab 4x4 with the 4.6 in my work truck. My thoughts:

Pros:
- Drove nice, stable, cornered well
- Basic but well laid out and rugged interior
- No engine related issues

Cons:
- Grossly underpowered
- Poor gas mileage (12-13 mpg)
- In cab noise, rattling heat shields, tranny clunks

Not a bad truck, but not a good one either. Would be a great truck with the 5.4L and would drive one as my personal rig.
