2005 900 Set Up/Adjustment Suggestions

I just took my first ride yesterday on a 2005 900 159" that I bought from a buddy last year. He upgraded to a 2011 Pro 163". The sled has the Full TCP (Centerville, UT) setup with all the Polaris Updates done. It has SLP Powder Pro skis that have the "Carls" Modification Done (Which I intend to replace with Simmons Gen 3) ASAP, Holtz Spindles with Stock A Arms, Walker Evans Clicker Shocks (He has them set with No Preload, I intend to Preload them about 2" of thread). It has a Big wheel kit, Ported stock 159" track, 2" Handle Bar Riser, Gold Finger Left Hand Throttle. Sled has 1043 miles on it and it runs very strong.
That being said I am 6'4" tall and weight about 220lbs at 44 years old. My previous sled for the last 7 years has been a 2002 800 RMK with all the SLP mods and a 159" track, Simmons Gen 1 Skis, Boss Seat and a 3" handle Bar riser, etc, etc.
Enough History....Yesterday I tipped the 900 over 3 times, once on flat ground. Standing, Straddling the machine I could carve left and right in an open untracked meadow with 3' of powder no problem. I could climb very well up an untracked hill but as soon as I came accross someones deep track the machine wanted to point back down hill. Even standing on the uphill running boards.
The sled is in New condition and I got a very good price on it but honestly I'm wishing I had just bought his 2004 Vertical Escape 4 years ago instead.
I am hoping the Simmons Gen 3 will help the front end float and it will be a similar behaving ski to what I'm used to. I think adding some preload to the shock will give it more stability (it still has the stock sway bars attached). I forgot to mention I plan to put some brand on snow eliminators on the running boards because they packed with snow that turned to ice in deep powder. I also plan to put a 4" handle bar riser on in place of the 2" if the factory cables are long enough. One last thing I had the handle bars adjusted fully forward and plan to adjust them back a notch or two and see how that works.
I'll take any advise, suggestions or criticism?

On mine when the stock sway bar was on it would point downhill when crossing someone else's tracks worse. More preload on the front shock again might make it worse. More preload will make it less tippy and removing the swaybar will make it more tippy but ride smoother on rough trails and side hill better.

After I switched to Timbersled rear I can cut other people tracks and it has no affect on the sled.

I just put on a 4 inch riser. You will need to pull the console and rearrange some wires in the looms or they are extremely tight on the bars. If you are putting a 4 inch riser on you better get one of Polzinhunters rider select deletes or you are going to break the rider select with the extra leverage.

Better boards will cure your snow packing in on the board problem. If it does build up just stomp your feet and the boards and they clear.

I run the powder pros with no problems but a lot of guys run the Simmons. What do you want for your powder pros?

Make sure your TCP intake has some kind of filter or powder screen on it so you don't suck snow into your engine. Also check the TCP intake for cracks in the welds. Because they are bolted to the front pan they don't have any flex when the engine tries to move. Mine cracked the welds and sheared off the Rivets holding the nose on. Switching to F & I now.

This is where you need a screen on the TCP intake.

This is what one of Polzinhunter Rider select deletes looks like for the 05. The 06 version is different.

These things have a very strong tendency to stay planted flat to the snow with the sway bar in... That would be the first thing I would remove if you plan to do much off-trail riding with it (sounds like you do). Once you remove the sway bar you will need to crank-up the pre-load on the front springs or if you want to spend some money, go with some Fox Zero-pros, either way you'll need to re-tune the front suspension to get it where you're happy.... with the sway-bar removed, the front of the sled will want to dive if set to soft, so be warned.

Depending on how much slack you can get out of your wires and brake lines you can get a 3" riser on there pretty easily, you're pushing it at 4", just depends how much re-routing you can do to make it work or not.

Definitely a RSD kit from Polzinhunter, VERY nice kit:beer; They are adjustalbe to positions 4-5-6 relative to the rider select.... I have found that the middle position (5) seems to work better and balance you much better on the machine than the extreme forward positions. It almost feels as though you just can't get enough leverage on the machine with them farther forward IMO.

Powder Pros are a good ski, but depending on your riding style, may be a bit too aggressive. Many here are fans of the now stock Polaris Gripper skis.... VERY similar in flotation (very good) but a slightly less aggressive bite to them. Ski pressure makes a big difference of course on how they react. I had the Simmons on my 02 800 151 and they floated good, but didn't turn well at all, I am now in love with the grippers, for my riding style they float and hold the line decently.

Good luck and welcome to the club:beer;

Thanks! Do you have a picture of the F and I intake? is it just an out with the TCP and in with the FandI install? Looks like the Polzin hunter delete is a starting point then sway bar delete since I have a lot of preload adjustment for ski pressure. I'll let you know when I get the Gen 3's. I heard they are still a couple weeks out.

loosen your limiter straps as well, and if you dont have the 225lb front track spring it will also help you

great writeup..
