Hope someone can give some ideas. The other day when I was pulling the boat home from the lake it cutted out on me coming up a hill. Then at the stop sign a mile down the road it died. Looked under the hood as it would only turn over and not start. After a few minutes it started and was fine. Now today i was going to my buddies house and I felt it cut out a couple times. i just put gas in it before all this happened so am hopeing that is what it is. Nothing shows up on the warning screen. Any Ideas? Thanks

most likely loosing the fuel pump..next time it dies and wont start..smack the bottom of the fuel tank with a broom handle while trying to start it..if it fires right up its the pump..or put a pressure guage on it when it acts up and see what it has for pressure....

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter? My vote is for the pump also!!!

On that model the filter is on the fuel pump. So i have never changed it.

Your fuel filter should be located in your frame rail right below the drivers side door. There is a micro screen located in the tank attached to the fuel pump. It could be your filter which is an easy 5 minute replacement, but it sounds more like your pump is dying if it caused your engine to shut down. I just had mine replaced at 110,000 miles. My truck would run fine with no load, but as soon as I climbed a hill or pulled a trailer I would loose all power. When my mechanic tested the fuel pressure it was just enough for the injectors to supply fuel, but not enough fuel for any kind of load. My "idiot" light never came on either, but it was obviously a fuel problem. He replaced the pump and no more problems. Good Luck.

truck

There is no fuel filter along the frame. Looked in my book and it shows it is on the pump itself. Could not find one either. Followed the lines all the way up to the motor. Then fuel pumps are spendy. Thanks for the input guys.

Most manufacturers quit the external fuel filter around 04. Why? Because the Federal Govt (EPA) fines manufacturers for every break in the fuel line where a leak is possible.

Truck

Well ever since I put some different gas in it it has not done it since. Got about 200 miles on it. Lets just hope.

sounds like a fuel pump, but if the tank was low it could have starved for fuel,i know from walking that when the low fuel light comes on you need to stop within 10 miles and get gas,the pump should supply 55psi to the fuel rail,

Nice to know I'm not the only one who discovered that the hard way!

As soon as you turn your key on you should be able to hear the fuel pump if you listen by the tank, if not and it doesn't start do what AK said but kick the crap out of it to get it's attention. Don't prolong the problem because it will eventually die completely, also, there is no external filter on your truck because that has been a big problem in earlier models, GM figured it was better to burn dirty fuel than plug a filter that should be changed yearly, especially up here and don't put gas in when the tanker is filling up, they stir the dirt up on the bottom. Almost forgot ..... don't trust the idiot light it doesn't always work. I've got 90,000 plus on that pig of mine but still have feelings for it.

Mine did this once coming out of Grand Junction,CO. Right after a fuel stop. I do have a fuel filter mounted under the hood. I pumped the primer a few times, added some fuel conditioner and it has run fine since. I have an '07 GMC and I have a filter. The guys saying that there is not a filter, what the heck?

what he said.

problem

my dad had a GM 8.1L that did the same thing. thought it was the pump to, we changed it, and the same thing kept happening. turned out it was the Catylatic Converter was plugged at 78,000 miles. put a new one on and a new muffler and it ran awesome. he also had a heat problem because it was plugged, it burnt out the right side header gasket, and burnt a whole through his aftermarket header becasue it got so hot. so my guess is it could be your Cat.
