2002 Summit 700 running rich at low speeds

When I hang with the kids, or run low RPMs in the woods the plugs seem to foul from the engine running too rich. If I don't run the engine at high RPMs for at least 30 seconds, it will be near impossible to start after running at low RPMs. The engine also backfires when it does first start.

Is this something I can easily adjust? Or do I need to dump $250 for service?
Thanks

I had the exact same sled a few years ago. Same problem.

1. Change main jets. Stock was 510. I went to 480 before the plugs looked good.

2. Larger pilot jet. 17.5 stock went to #20 ( going leaner on the mains made my midrange to lean)

3. Turned in the idle mixture screw 1/2 turn on each carb.

4. Move the plastic washer from over the clip on the needle jet to under the clip. They are not adjustable needles on that year. Moving the washer will be a change of about 1 groove on an adjustable needle.

I ride at 7,000 and up. If you are lower, don't go as lean on the mains.

Hope this helps.
