2002 Skidoo MXZ 800 Renegade? Good or Bad?

Hey guys,
Possibly buying this sled, have heard that they take out pistons every few thousand miles, true or not? Any other things I should know?
Thanks so much!

My buddy has a 02 700 Renegade and a 02 800 Summit... both are bullit proof with TONS of miles on them. I would look into delaminating carb boots and piston rings flaking... buy vforce 3 reeds and do a top end kit with dual ring pistons and put 5000 miles on her! Pull and go sleds!

I had a 2002 Renegade 700. The sled ran great flatland, but horrible at elevation. There was a carb problem with the 2002's. Here is a link to an article that xtreme performance did.

I did not do the update because it called for removing the DPM, and I only rode 1 week at elevation per year. Every year I would hope it would run better, but no luck. I rode with another 2002 Renegade 700, a 2002 600 Renegade and a 2002 Summit 600 that all ran like crap at elevation. One hill the sled would rip all the way to the top, the next, it would be like it was running on 1 cylinder, and the next it would go good half way up, then loose power so fast you could not even turn out.
I heard Ski-Doo did a recall/service bulletin or whatever they called it. The recall did not apply to the Renegades. I did not ride with the Summit after the recall.
If you plan to ride at elevation, my advice would be to skip the Renegade and get a Summit, and possibly even skip a 2002 all together.
My opinion.

I've got a 2002 Renegade 700 and it's been pretty good. Toasted the motor a few weeks back due to loss of coolant, but now it's fine. I've never had it at any high elevation, so I'm not sure what it acts like there.

The only recall for my sled was a carb adjustment.

My 02 Renegade 700 has been great, we run at 6-7000 ft here in the Black Hills. I dropped the main jets 1 size and took off the RER secondary, put in a lightweight adjustable pin kit, it now runs at 8100 and will run 100 mph on hardpack at 6500 ft altitude and several times I have made 20 mpg riding with my wife, what more could you want, and reliable so far.
