2001 800 highmark no spark

My son and I went for a ride today and his sled stalled once and wouldnt restart. I messed with the kill switch and it started right up. We rode for a couple more hours and stopped for a break and it would not restart no spark. I cut the 2 wires going to the kill switch and no luck wired them together and no luck. Soooo its not the kill switch. Plugged in a different DESS cord no luck. The headlight does not try to light up when I pull the cord. Stator? any ideas?

Think there is a cdi box, is what they call it could of went out . Had the same happen to me on another sled got it running by bypassing the kill switch then died all together. Had to replace what i believe is called a CDI

Thanks for the reply. I think its called the MPEM. It looks like there is no way to test it except replcacement for a known good one. Might have to go to the stealer.

Had the same thing happen to me 2 seasons ago. Borrowed a buddy's MPEM and still nothing. Bought a stator, started right up. However, when I was replacing the stator, I found that it was all soaked in oil and there was a bunch of extra junk in there(leaves/twigs/etc). I think I could have just cleaned it up real good and it would have been fine, but I didn't want to mess with it since I already had a new one. Might be worth just pulling the recoil assembly off and looking in there to see what kinda shape it is in.

Thanks. I agree its probably the stator. I have had them go out before but never on both sides (accesory lighting and ignition). We shall soon see.

Put a digital Voltmeter (DMM) on AC volts at the regulator input. Usually it's 2 yellow wires and a common center-tap. Put the meter across the yellows. Pull the cord and see if you see a voltage reading. Should be probably 5-10 volts while ripping on the pull-starter. If nothing there work your way back to the stator. If there is voltage go from the regulator forward.

Now if you could solve my speedometer problem i posted about..!:face-icon-small-win

Thanks for the info will give that a try. :thumb:

I have not seen a speedo do that! You might try sacrificing a chicken or a virgin over the sled ahahahah.

Yep stator was bad. Got 3.8 vac when I ripped it over with the plugs out. Pulled the sator out and she is cooked.

Anybody buy one from RM stator on ebay? They are $175 with free shipping and a 30 day warranty. Beats $350 from Doo.

Glad you solved the problem. 175 is a pretty good chunk of change. Might be worthwhile though if the vintage are known to fail as yours has. Much easier than rewinding your own for sure.

hi im new here but have the same problem with no spark. did you ever check if the yellow wires had continuity to ground on the chassis? i have that and wondering if thats the issue? not supposed to ? seems strange? thanks for any reply.

Stator

I got the one I pulled out of my sled. Like I said, I'm fairly sure it wasn't bad after I cleaned it all up, but I put the new one in anyway. I'll send it to you if you cover the shipping....worth a shot before dropping a bunch of cash.

Thanks a bunch!! I already ordered the one on e-bay.:face-icon-small-sad

yes continuity to ground. There is a test procedure in the manual (which I dont have) for the stator, trigger and all related components. I believe you should be looking for a resistance measurement between the yellow leads and the black one in the loom.

Last ride, Last season the new AM stator burned up! Just the ignition side of the stator but nevertheless it is cooked. Barely 500 miles on it. I hate to replace it again if there is something wrong that is damaging these stators or is it just a bad quality stator from AM? Hmmmmmmm.:face-icon-small-dis
