2000 700 questions.

hi guys. i just picked up this sled in a trade, and there are a few particulars about it that i have questions about.

first off, the oil injection has been deleted. are there any issues with lubrication after someone does this? also, the previous owner was mixing 50:1. does that sound right? sounds a little lean to me. not sure if i want to keep it like this, or find a used oil injection setup and reinstall it. what do you guys think?

also, it was originally a 136, but someone put a 144 in there and just removed the snowflap. it needs a proper tunnel extension. who has the best priced extensions out there? anyone have a used one?

and does anyone have the 01-03 (i think) mountain skis for sale? the ones that look like they're on backwards? i used to have some on another sled and i loved them. would like to get some on this one.

i'll probably have a few more questions as i dig into this thing some more, but this is enough to get started with.

thanks.

50:1 is lean I would run at least 40:1,
one thing I would check, in 00 or maybe 01 the 700 had a piston recall, (I could be wrong but it stick in my head) might want to get some info on that and if it was recalled.

yeah, 40:1 was what i was thinking as well. the guy i got it from is NOT a sled guy at all. he just got it to play around with on the farm, but now figured he'd rather have a dirt bike. he only had it for one season.

as for the pistons, apparently the motor was rebuilt by a mechanic from a fairly reputable shop down at the coast. so at this point i'm assuming that if there were a recall, it has been taken care of. might have even got some porting, but who knows for sure. the shop didn't remember the sled when i emailed them, but said that it could have very easily been a former employee's personal sled.

edit: looks like the recall was for 01, according to what i can find on google.

hey guys, i was just looking at an exploded diagram of the oil injection system, trying to figure out what i'm missing, and what i would need to reinstall it.

by the looks of it, there is just the reservoir, and 2 lines that connect back to the motor. http://www.dirtcheapsnow.com/fiche_...=Snowmobiles&make=SKI-DOO&year=2000&fveh=2569

my question is, how does the engine get the right amount of oil? does it just siphon out what it needs? or is there something that needs to be adjusted and set up? is there anything missing from the picture?

and i'm guessing that it would be a trial and error to find out if it's working once installed? i'd say run some premix gas and watch for indications of rich oil, and/or check that the reservoir level drops?

or should i even bother, and just suck it up and mix the gas every time it gets used?

anyone know if 10 tooth anti ratchet drivers from a rev will work with this sled? i''m guessing that if they do, lug height would be limited, right?

edit- just noticed that my stock ones are 9 tooth. i'm guessing that this is not a good idea anymore.

An oil line goes from the oil tank to the pump on the rear bottom center of the engine, then into the 2 lines behind the cranks. There is another oil line above the pump to the center drive gear. Your throttle cable should have another end than what goes to the carbs, that's what goes to the pump. I'm sure you can find something about adjustment online.

Most of the time they remove the oil pump when you premix, you might need to find a pump. The 700 had a famous ring flake issue but there wasn't a recall on the pistons. If it was rebuilt recently the rings should be the new style, shouldn't be any issues there. To adjust the oil pump you need to have the cable attached to the pump, the carbs and your throttle block. There is a brass looking threaded adjuster on the oil pump side of the cable. Pull on the cable and the adjuster will seperate. Measure between the two fittings (where the bare cable is exposed) and it should be 18.5 mm (you might want to call your dealer and double check the distance, if your sled has round slide carbs this number could be different). Make sure there is no slop in your cable between your throttle block, and the slides on the carbs. It should pull on the slides as soon as you touch the throttle. Then adjust the nut on the oil side of the cable to the proper length and its set.

thanks guys.

has anyone had any bad side effects from doing away with the oil system? i gotta ask cuz a bunch of cat guys that have done it to the M's have had trouble with the bottom end staying lubed. sounds like some of them have installed a greese nipple and pump some grease in there once in a while to get around the problem.

is this something to consider, or is it possibly something particular to the laydown engine of the cat?

i'm considering leaving it as is now, since it sounds like reinstalling the oil would be more involved than i first thought.

Hey guys,
I had a 2001 800 X, for about 7 years and for 2 seasons I got rid of the oil injection and mixed fuel. there is a nipple that feeds oil to your water pump and center bearing that needs to have oil going to it, I just hook a clear hose to it and kept full, I didn't need to add oil very often. and the rest of the crank case gets oiled buy the fuel and oil mix. Personally I ended up putting the oil injection back on because the weight savings wasn't worth the hassle of mixing fuel and worrying about the right mixture.

Friends of mine who have bought sleds that have had to oil system deleted we have gone back to the oil system. Its nice to just pull up to the pump and fill sled and check oil. Also if your out riding and run low or out of gas don't have to worry about oil in gas ( as we all just carry gas without oil ). Have even helped other sledders out with gas and its nice not to worry about oil in it. I think I have some parts if you need them.

well, if someone had all the parts i need (reservoir, pump, lines, etc) as a package, and it was priced well, i might still consider putting it all back in.

good to know about that water pump line. i'll check for that soon.

There are lots of sled salvage yards around where you can pickup the oil system, start on e-bay and check out the sellers stores, lottsa parts out there.
