...winter storm warning remains in effect until 9 pm mst friday...
A winter storm warning for heavy snow and strong winds remains in
effect until 9 pm mst friday.
This winter storm warning is for all of the mountains of utah.
Storm total accumulations of 20 to 30 inches of snow can be
expected through friday evening. In addition to the snow...very
strong southwest winds...with gusts in excess of 80 mph near
ridgetops...will create blowing and drifting snow through
thursday afternoon.
Strong southwest winds have already developed across the
mountains. These winds will get stronger during the evening...and
will create dangerous winter weather conditions.
Snow will continue to develop late this afternoon. This snow will
turn heavier overnight...and will result in significant
accumulations along south and southwest facing
slopes....especially over the far northern mountains.
Heavy snow will continue into christmas day. A cold front
sweeping south through utah during the day will keep snow heavy
through thursday evening. Snow will remain heavy in areas
favoring a north or northwest flow through much of the day
friday. All areas will see snow taper off friday evening.
This is a dangerous winter storm. Travel will become quite
difficult or impossible in many higher elevation locations by
tonight.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A winter storm warning means a mixture of heavy snow and strong
winds is expected or occurring. Driving conditions will be
hazardous. Use caution. Be prepared for sudden restrictions in
visibility due to blowing snow. Keep a winter storm survival kit
in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
