two weeks ago had the sled out for 3 to 4 hours and it died . drug it home a few days later . checked it , bad vr . replaced the vr with a good known one . sled fires up runs good . had it out last sunday for an hour , all good. take it out this sunday and quits about 45 min later. re fires but no gauges, then quits. so i walk back and get a tow sled and drag it back . sled fire then smoke rolls out from under the ecu. ok i asked for it by re starting it. shred it down thinking there is a shorted wire somewhere. went thru the whole harness and found nothing. what are the chances both regs crapping out back to back, not so good right? both regs were the first updated number not the current number. anybody have any ideas. dont want to throw a new ecu at it to see it go up in smoke to.

You may need to check your grounds. Many guys added ground wires to tie everything together. There is a great thread with photos in the Increasing Your IQ sticky at the top of this forum. Cheap fix before throwing another ECU and VR in.

Ecu

Not sure what year you are talking but the 08-10 Dragons had real issues with the VR. Polaris is on the 3rd rendition. Grounding is a common issue. I think the regs are poor quality too. Loosing lights and or gauges is common indicator that it is failing. I also wonder if heat is an issue, having a capacitor sitting on top of something with cooling fins as large as the reg has can't be good for cooling. I mounted a small dc cooling fan above mine to blow on it after moving the capacitor.

Had a similar issue with mine a couple weeks ago... I think that the ecu may have been "precooked" after the first time and it caused the reg to burn up. Hard to tell though. The ecu *shouldnt* be able to fry out the regulator if it was bad, but who knows with electrical things:face-icon-small-con

I think Polaris is actually on the 5th or 6th rev. I put a motor to chassis ground on my assault and got the most recent VR. No problems so far. Im not impressed with Polaris's quality on electronics. And that includes the pros also.
