2-26-11 Van Epps fail AKA stuck sled thread

So yesterday I meant- 2/25. Well, we were some of the first up to gallagher, and tore that up pretty good. decided to head over and try to break in van epps at about 1pm. It was my first time out there, so not sure what route we tried to break trail (ask Revy), but on the way over, hooked up with about 8 other riders. We go up on on the ridge and start dropping down some pretty steep sh!t and end up in the trees a couple of small bowls away from the van epps area. At this point, pretty much we're all scratching our heads trying to figure out how the hell we are going to get out. Let's just say that about half the group had no business being there-probably me included. It was expert riding, and it took till 730pm to get everyone out. Tons of stucks, tons of digging, tons of hiking, and no riding in van epps. You are all very welcome to use our newly constructed van epps super highway though until the next snow.

Not exactly sure where you were but ..... I hope you were! When riding in that area you need to be sure of EXACTLY where the wilderness boundary is.

Not flaming, just saying!

Yea, apparently the rest of the group knew the trail plus or minus 200 yards. We were apparently on an ORV trail part of the time. Appreciate the info as I didn't know there was designated wilderness around there. Kind of a rag tag group of people who all met up on the way over, fairly sure we were legal, but I was trusting the expert riders.

i wondered where you guy's went. there should be a gas station at the lake. i had 20 miles in by the time VanEpps and i were done cutting the lake up.

No_uh, the wilderness line borders that whole riding area. (Van Epps, LK Anne, Esmeralda basin) The boundary follows the ridge line on the east side all through there. When dropping into Van Epps you're basically riding along the border... if you drop right you're in wilderness. FYI

Friday was awesome, first tracks into Gallagher lake area. Just two guys for around 30 min, tearing up fresh everywhere you looked. Then one more XP made it in, all thanks to Roosterbuilt! What a day

Looking at the picture--I am thinking they did were in the hawkins /gallagher area!!

I doubt they even got close to Van Epps or wilderness looking at it.

But knowing where you are at is hugely important up there to prevent these major issues.

Glad you all made it out.

Guess Jeff made a good call tagging along. but we were in the first group going into Gallegher and there were 16+ that made it in 2 minutes after we watch van epps and i'lldoit cross the creek and some stucks but everone there got awesome pow not just 3 guys :face-icon-small-win
and it was funny cuz only a small group went into van epps scatter lake ann area and if there was more daylight we would have broke into scatter creek we werent that far off the trail in about 100 feet to left and while it got scetchy for some guys getting out time was the enemy for sure.
H20ski and me have been in alot worst :face-icon-small-win

Yea, thanks van epps, we hit the ridge and dropped in to the south. it was amateur hour for most of us trying to get out, but a great adventure even though my gf was flippin out wondering what happened to me. I was in follow the leader mode all day since i'd never been out there. looking at the forecast, the winter has just begun

No doubt.. thinking about mounting another 3 gallon jerry!

My Group was the first one into Van Epps on Saturday after the big dump of snow a few days earlier. There were zero tracks once we got onto the ridge before dropping down into the single track trail in. It took a few attempts to get in there but we were able to beat a path in. It was deep but you were still able to climb and get into any area you wanted to. We were very careful what we were climbing on due to the new snow and avy conditions. They must have had about 4 feet of new last week and the sun did peek out a few times on Saturday.

We left a lot of the steep terrain back there untouched due to the avy danger level. One large face did slide before we got in there. After all the snowfall in the last day and coming this week it will be deep again back there next weekend for sure.

Nice---you put up the forecast for the crater buddy--now show us the forecast for the riding area---Still going to be DEEP!!

it is the riding area i clicked it for between 5000 to 7000 feet not the crater:lol::lol::lol::lol::face-icon-small-ton
