A group of 11 of us (5 dads / 6 sons) from Canada just booked the Huckleberry Lodge the week after Presidents day (Feb 17-22). It is on the north end of Island Park on highway 20 by the Chevron Station on the east right corner (approx. mile marker 394).

We were told that we are close to west Yellowstone, Two Top & Lion's gate.

We usually ride Cooke City this time if the year, but we heard good things about this area. We are not interested in riding trails, only to get to the back country

Any feedback would be much appreciated. Such as..... access to back country, trail passes, any other info.

Thank you in Advance!

Welcome to Mount Jefferson.
If the snow gods smile on you, you're going to have a BLAST.

Lot's of good riding in that area!! With fresh snow you will be set if it hasn't dumped in a while you may need to go looking a little, i have yet to take a trip out to that area and not find good snow.

You are definitely close to all of those. I would watch forecasts and be very cautious around Lion's Head and Jefferson. Those are hotspots for some nasty avys, but there is plenty of terrain to ride that is 'safe'. You will most likely look into a non-resident sticker (prob what you meant by trail pass) because they check like crazy at most of the fuel stations/lodges/restaurants around I.P. (I won't say I haven't had luck riding around there without one, but it's risky) Almost every store has an ample supply of trail/area maps, and the signage is good depending on where you head.

There is all kinds of backcountry riding anywhere from meadows, trees, hills, really big steep hills, and everything else. You will have plenty of time to see it all if you're riding for 3-4 days. Plenty of local knowledge up there so don't hesitate to ask around. If the snow is good by then, expect to have plenty of company just about everywhere you go. You will still get fresh tracks though, so plan on having a great time. Good luck and ride safe!

Island Park is an amazing place to ride, you will find all sorts of riding areas for all types of skill levels. West Yellowstone is about a 45 minute drive by car from Island Park, little further by sled. it is possible to ride to Lionshead from Island Park but it gets to be a long ride and waste fuel riding trails all the way up there. There are plenty of good play areas to the east of Island Park in the Black Canyon area or the Jefferson area the west. Give the folks at Robins Roost (Chevron station) a call for snow conditions, they are very friendly and have always been helpful to us, they are a grocery store also so they have many items that you need for your stay.

Have Fun.

Thanks everyone for your replies! We were worried @ first, but looks like we made a good decision on Island Park area! Let it snow!!!!!!
