1996 and 1997 Ultra differences ?

Hi guys.
I have a 1997 Ultra SP (purple wedge) and i've just found out the damn crank isn't exactly 100%...seems like I'll have to rebuild the friggin thing :tsk:

For a while I was wondering whether I could a crank from a '96 Ultra? I seem to remember someone mentioning differences concerning the water pump ?

Let's make this question more understandable:

What cranks can I use IF I come across other machines in decent shape?
Other Ultra's? XCR 600 SP ? Storm ?

The engines are the same, the 96 ultra had a bad sight glass window on the water pump that would break and cause a coolant leak and possible overheating issues. Other then that the exhaust and engine mounts are different because the 96 was The wedge body and the 97 was the aggressive. As far as cranks go I believe the 750 and 800 storm cripples work too. Bottom end was based of the 680 ultra just a bigger bore in the top end.

That's actually not totally correct, the Ultra did come as a wedge in '97 and '98, here's mine for example: http://polarisman.com/site/DisplayModel.cfm?ModelID=97SNOINDYULTRASP&Year=1997

And after checking out the part number for the '97 crank it seems like I can only use cranks from '97-'98 Ultras and XCR 600 SP.
I guess I'll rebuild it then :face-icon-small-con
 
I have a similar quest....I picked up a 90's model wedge with a 650 tripple....and i have a 95 indy trail that has very few miles on with a blown out 500 twin...has anyone made this swap???

Are the motor mounts spaced out the same? You would have to use the 500 twin motor mounts for that bulkhead... I guess it would depend on if the engine would clear on the water pump side with the 500 mounts in the chassis. Then if the pipes would clear everything with those motor mounts.
