170+ Yami coming?

I heard a rumor Yami might be tweaking their 3 cylinder motor to crank out some 170+ hp. Don't know what model. Something about rods, pistons, crank being reworked. Has anybody heard this as well, or is this just bs. It didn't come from a relaible source that's why I ask the question. Please don't bash me, it's just what I was told.

Naa, personally i don't believe it. Heard the same rumor for this season, but they only rev up 6 ponnies in the RS engine.

But a 170 N/A HP Nytro based engine wud ROCK! :beer;

i don't think you could make that kind of power from that engine without spinning it a lot higher rpms and then you go backwards in adding the gear reduction more weight, etc... factory boost at 180hp would be more realistic and make Nytro's sell like hot cakes! :D If cat can do 177hp boost from a twin on a factory sled, why can't yammi?

I believe the 170+ rumor traveled a little to far now when it's connected to the Nytro engine, the rumor started when talk about Apex replacement was ongoing, and in an new Apex i believe on ~170hp, as mrquick68 says, Nytro engine doesent have the RPM for it, that kind of rpm requires gearing down the clutch, and that is not an option on the Nytro, then it would be disqualified from racing.

Why don't they just punch the nytro engine out to a 1200 for the apex replacement and they should get some power out of that.

same reason as stated above....racing rules allow 1050cc ...the displacement of the nytro.

now the apex should be kicked up to say 1300cc or even 1500cc....oh yea!! it has no rules to follow!

I was die hard yamaha for years but finally switched to cat this year because unless you turbo the sled it can't keep up. Now if the came out with a stock turbo or a stock stroker with 180 ish HP i might just have to switch back. Fit and finish on the yammi's was way better than my cat!

I meant keep the 1050 for the nytro just punch out or stroke that motor as a replacement for the apex. Has anyone bored or stroked one of these motors in the aftermarket?

a freind of mine is lookin at ways to bump the power on his apex, no boost cause he has a Tnytro but wants mroe jam in the apex. The R1 motors in stock form put out around 180hp so why can;t the apex motor (which is based off the R1 motor) be able to put ouw similiar numbers with possiblsy some head work

Hey roughrider, I asked that same ? 2 years ago with no responses. The 180hp on the bike is spinning around 14000rpm! I would think it would still be feasable since the apex already has the gear reduction in it, it would just have to be regeared! I loved the sound of my apex at 11,000rpm it would sound awesome at 14,000 +!

The only other thing I have seen is to recam them. Racinstation was doing this but they didn't have any hp #'s to get me interested. I would have had to send in mine and they rework it.

snowcross sled are supposed to put out 165hp the 3 banger will make that power but it will cost header ,pipe,head work,bump the comp,mabey a little timing & some race fuel no prob.:D:beer;:beer;

Nothing wrong with that hp. Bring that down to 150+ on pump gas and you got yourself a nice well balanced reliable sled to get you anywhere. I would sure like to be a fly on the wall at Yamaha engineering department to see what their thinking pattern is. Maybe they think that we all are going to turbo/Sc them so 130hp doesn't matter to most people.

for what it's worth

Last spring i went to the dealer meeting in West Yellowstone and Yamaha flat out told us that they aren't that interested in improving the mountain segment that much more because their biggest market is the flat landers and ditch bangers in the great lakes and eastern areas. That is the market they were targeting for 09' at least. Haven't heard much for the 2010 sleds.

Also for what its worth, Yamaha is due for a big step. Ever since 1997 they have done something different about every three years. (97' MM, 2000 mm, 03' RX-1, 06' apex, 08' nitro, 09' bold new graphics, maybe they skipped a year, 2010... ?)

You guys are right about the power output in the R1 motor. But think about the differrent dynamics in the two uses. How long is a R1 ever at 13,500 RPM? Not very long. Only under hard acceleration and right before a shift. Seconds at a time at the very most. A sled on the other hand will sit at full RPMs for minutes at a time, under full load. (depending on how big your mountains are and how deep the snow is LOL)

Yamaha probably did their testing (with a little common sense) and realized the motors are substantially more reliable at lower RPMs in a sled application.

With that said, the fact these motors can hold together at those RPMs attests to how trick they are. :cool: Amazing technology in the Apex motor.

well to bump ip the power does the rpm's need to be bumped up? would it not be possible to do something like advance timing, increase compression a tad, port n poilsh and a cam? i was able to find heads for my truck with the chevy 350 that were drop in and a claimed 70hp. I think with engine work the apex could be in the 180hp range and that would be wonderful. apparently the snocross nytro puts out 165hp with compression and head work.

i know for a fact there was a company out east making 200+hp n/a rx1 motors. dont remember the cost,but seen vids of the & they were fast.:beer;

i would really like to find out who would be doing that a friend has searched everywhere for a place to get more power out of his apex but keep it N/A and i would like what is done also. very interested any info greatly appreciated.
