16 cell ballistic battery

Anyone install a 16 cell ballistic battery in their machine yet?
Dimensions look at little off to fit in the seat back.

Shoot me an email Travis. I was looking at that today actually as my sled is now pdi'd and ready to tear apart.

Do you have it sitting with the posts up.
Probably had to extend the negative cable a bit and modify the bracket slightly?

The battery sits like it did in the stock location with the foam spacers to compensate for the difference in size. The battery is shifted slightly to the side with the negative terminal so it would reach but I didn't have to extend the cable. Rode with it like that for nearly 800 miles last year through some rough trails to the alpine areas we ride in Revy with no problems.

Could you please post a picture of your install.
I'm having trouble seeing how the hold down bracket would fit with the battery on it's side like the factory one is.
Thanks for your help.

I will be moving mine to beside the pipe like I did on my last one. Handy to boost and couple pounds in the front end under boost is not a bad thing.

anyone ever try the phantom lithium batterys same size but weigh like 1lb, the battery shop says there great in cold weather, anyone know for sure dont wanna be left stuck somewere

That to me sounds like a guy trying to sell a battery. Nothing against the business as I don't know them, but everyone in the battery game knows that any lithium battery is not great in cold weather.....but you try to go as small as possible and still be reliable. I am comfortable with a lithium that is double the stock acid CCA for the temps I ride. I wouldn't go smaller than a 12 cell. There is also varying degrees of quality in the cells any vendor uses. Very rare to have the best of both worlds. Smallest, lightest, cheapest aren't words common in powersports lol.

OK - so I installed the 16 cell ballistic with the posts up. Actually fits fine - used the foam packing the battery came in - doesn't move around at all.
Had to grind out one of the bracket holes to fit around the pin connector on the battery and extend the negative cable about 9". Re-positioned a few of the wires and it fits just fine. Nice 10 lb. saving.
It's beer time. Cheers.

The two bold sentences are the most accurate I have ever read on SnoWest regarding Lithium battery technology as it relates to snowmobiles.

Freddy,

This is not an indictment of your mechanical ability....

Be VERY careful when connecting your battery leads. Lithium cells do not typically survive an "oh sh!t" moment if you were to accidentally drop a screwdriver across the terminal or otherwise dead short to the bracket. Another area where lead acid is more robust-- the accidental dead short.

Again, not dissing your install at all....just want to warn you and others about an inherent weakness of Lithium.

Also, make sure that you do not have a parasitic draw (like a lot of Yamaha Nytros) that will draw that battery below 10.5 Volts static. Lithium cannot recover from over discharge. Another inherent weakness of current Lithium technology.

For those of you looking to move the battery to the area around the pipe, I have a question.

What is the operating temperature, or environmental temperature that these batteries can operate in?

My guess is that the battery can become very hot when exposed to the area around the pipe, and if so, can you unwantingly "cook" the battery to death by placing it in this location?

Follow a couple basic rules and this isn't rocket science. When working on anything electrical - leave your negative lead off and taped up till the very end - this should be your last connection.

Sage Crusher:
I extended the negative lead about 9 " - as the posts are reversed on the Ballastic 16 cell. Just make sure you solder and shrink wrap your connections and you'll be fine. You'll also need to reposition a few of the other wires around the relay - but they will all fit just fine.

I moved mine as shown in a few posts. I have a straight pipe, full vented side panel, and I wrapped the side of the battery closest to the pipe in the muffler blanket material from a 800. It was fine. Had trouble melting snow in there....Wouldn't have even needed the wrap in my install.

Thanks for the compliment Murph:yo:
