since doo came out with the new backcountry i have wanted to build my own. my idea of the backcountry would be take my 06 renegade x 800 and mix it with an 09 crossfire. i already have narrow spindles for an adjustable ski stance, 8 inch risers (which i want to change out for rox adjustable one), SHR 150 hp kit, C&A XT skis, my own custom highrise seat, and panel venting.
the only thing i am not happy with is the track. i tore the stock 135x1.25x16 last year and now have a 136x1.25x15 ripsaw with 168 studs for MN riding. when i take it out west i install a rail extension and 144x2x15. each track works great respectively but i am so sick of changing tracks 4+ times a year. i want something that i can just clutch it and go!
i think the ideal track for me that would be a good compromise in all conditions is a 141x1.5x15 off a crossfire. i know i would need 3" pitch drivers but i'm having a difficult time figuring out how to take up the 2.5" of extra length in the back.
first i thought i could go with 8 or 9 inch wheels and an offset axle, but i really don't like the look of billet wheels and don't want to spend $500 on that setup. maybe i could use some plastic 8" wheels and still buy an offset axle, that may be a bit cheeper, but would it take up enough track?
next i thought i could use my rail extension from the 144 but i think it will be too long and hit the track behind the wheels. a smaller extension won't work either because it will be so short there won't be much of a slot for adjusting the track tension.
the last thing i thought of and the free way to do it would be to set back the skid somewhere around 1.5 to 2 inches and take up the rest of the slack with the tensioner. i think there is positives and negatives with this though. in the powder, i think the shallower angle of attack would really help but on the other side will it really throw off the geometry of the coupled SC-4 suspension for trail and ditch riding? i would relocate the mounts so the track sat level but im concerned about having the whole suspension shifted back and really hurting the ride and ability to transfer weight?
i would like to hear what everyone thinks about this. if i could get it to work i think it would be the perfect setup for me.
