130 snowmobiling volunteers on a mission to save the white-tail deer pop. of north MN

with zero scientific proof that this acutally helps the deer. Yep solid work DNR

Has it ever occurred to them that maybe this is a natural process to keep the population in check?
I know in some parts of the country numbers are down, while in others they are over populated!

Yea, Its hard to say one way or the other without knowing population numbers and what the population objectives are for that area.

I know in the areas of MN that I hunt numbers have been down.

My main intention was just to shed some light on snowmobilers out trying to do somthing positive. Compared to the negative press given to our sport by the Moose "self-defence" story a few weeks back.

We used to do the muzzleloader hunt up north. Now it's a lottery to get a tag. We see a lot of wolf tracks in the area and not many deer. This past bear season I saw 3 different wolves on my 15 mile drive back to the cabin one night all in different areas. I believe the wolves are a bit too thick for the deer and moose to recover.

I don't know if the wolves are having as much affect as people say. We've had a large wolf population for a long time. Yes they are spreading but we've had em for a good amount of time and had some bang up deer herds.

I'm more inclined to think this years snow/cold and lasts years late snow have more hurt to the deer.

Go ahead and drink the liberal cool-aid and think the wolves don't have a huge effect on the deer herd.
But that aside this feeding program is a joke, if the deer have not been fed up to this point it's WAY to late to start now. The deer have know way to adjust to a way to rich feed from a starving condition. Their system just can't handle going from brush and pine needles to high fat, protein feed.
Does feeding work? yes, but it needs to start much earlier than mid to late March. Can it work starting this late? Probably, but would need to be a much higher fiber, (poor quality) feed.
