13 pro 800 with BD GTX2863 Tial burned up turbine wheel.

On the last few rides I noticed a intermittent WOT bog and high afr during bog.
When I was checking things out I found that the turbine wheel is all chewed up at the leading edge like it was sand blasted and looks like it got really hot.

Engine looks great but has a lot of carbon buildup from the leaded fuel. Could this chalky buildup take out a turbine wheel? The only broken part I can find is 2 reeds that are missing a sliver at the corner.

Anyone ever see this before?

Could it be from foreign object damage? Like a piece of metal going into the turbine? Do you have a pic of the wheel?

Sorry just read the other thread you are on. Is the turbine chewed up on the hot or cold side or both?

Only the hot side. The compressor wheel looks perfect.

The leading edge of the turbine looks like it has been sand blasted and very thin. The back side of the fin is black from heat. And there are chunks missing.

For all I know it could have been this way for a long time but I just found it when looking for a reason for the bog.
Btw I think the reason for the bog is worn out reeds. But not sure.
I still can't figure out what hit the turbine.

Yea your probably correct the bog is probably the chipped reeds. Something went through there, it looks beat up alright. Inside the bottom part of the engine, behind the reed cages. How clean is it in there? Im running a Boost-it HO kit this year and it comes with a K&N and a outerwear.

Bottom end looks perfect. Turbo bearing has almost no play.
The only thing I can think of is there is a lot of carbon buildup from leaded fuel. Maybe chunks of that blasted the turbine over the last 1000 miles.
Here is a pic of broken reed.

The broken reed is enough to make a bog for sure. As far as the compressor fins go, rust in the pipe can cause that. It doesnt take very long when your sled sits, especially outside, for the inside of your pipe to rust. This rust will flake off in small quantities and can damage the fins when the rust flakes go through the turbo. If our sleds sit for more than a month, I take the pipes off and dump them out and blow compressed air through them and try to knock as much of the rust off that I can.

Maybe it would be a good idea to use a pipe plug from my dirtbike to prevent rust. There was a lot of rust and carbon buildup. This sled spends a lot of time on my sled deck traveling around the northwest rainy weather.

I ordered new reeds from you on Monday so hopefully that will fix the bog. Thanks for the input!

rust, and carbon. Been there done that.

suxs..
Rust in the pipe, I never thought of that but makes sense... That sucks Matco. Can,t you just buy a new Hot side wheel for that turbo? ADP or Rotomaster in Van BC have been able to fix just about any turbo I give them.

NEGATIVE, everywhere I have checked only has a complete turbo no parts available for the GTX2863. If somebody can find one cheaper than $1200 I would be interested.

I'm still not completely sold on the carbon and rust taking that wheel out. seems like it would be really common on these sleds.

The gtx series share the same turbine wheel as the GT family i believe, should be very easy to get another turbine wheel, have it replaced and rebalanced.

Have them confirm the bearings are still good when the rebuild it, depending how long it has been out of balance it could have wrecked the bearings.

So far everyone I have talked to said That it is not interchangeable. I wish I could just use a cartridge from a GT and install my billet wheel. any good rebuild shops in the NW?

You're welcome...and thank you for the order!
