'12 rmk 600 w/prototype engine

Just thought Id post this up and see what guys think about it.

Buddy picked up a '12 rmk 600 155" that was a demo sled. I was lookin it over with him and noticed a sticker on the PTO cylinder that said prototype.

I mentioned it to him and said he may want to look into it incase it requires different parts etc...

He checked with the dealer just to see what they thought. He had to send pic of the sticker & vin. A few days later, he got a call. Polaris is offering a new topend installed free at any dealer, for the one he has, or he can keep as is????

They claim its the same engine that went into production. Is Polaris just being nice and offering the exchange or what?

Anyone run into this before?

I think yea, give me a new top end, but why the kind offer?

Interesting. Typically Polaris does not sell the demo units. They put them out there for pre-buy riding and when the season is done they come back to the factory and get disected and then destroyed.

How that sled made it out of the system would be interesting.

Why they are offering, don't know. I would suspect that there is slight differences in the motor he has and they just don't want it left out in the wild.

I'd opt for the new topend... fresh topend for free is a good deal.

I and everyone else would probably love to see some pics. Do you have another 12 600 nearby that you can compare to to see if there are any visual differences, short of taking it apart?

If it's a 12, you would think they already put those changes into production for 13 if they proved positive results.

Hmmmm.....I'd keep it.....like it is.....for as long as possible.....if it's a good running sled. Chances are the mapping, motor, etc. are better running than a true production sled.

It would suck to take it in for the free top end only to have it returned to a detuned sled IF it really is a prototype.

Does the ECM have a sticker or any writing on it?

I think along the lines of what you have all said... A lot of questions with it.

Ill try to get the owner on here and see if he'll get on here and get some pictures. He has 30 days to decide evidently.

Havent really looked at much else closely on the sled. Id think if anything else was of interest to polaris, they would of mentioned other changes, outside of the top end.

Its the first 600 ive looked at, so nothing stood out to me i guess. The head design is definitely different in appearance from the 800, i did notice that right away. Thats what got me lookin at the cylinders.

If it were mine, id be tearin it apart out of curiosity! Haha

As long as the warrantee coverage is the same I would keep it. Prototype sleds don't have to meet all the emission standards of a production sled. It probable has better mapping at the least. If he bought it with a warrantee they can't void it because they didn't realize its a prototype sled and if it goes down they are going to fix it with a new production top end anyways.

Sled is not under warranty...

Do remember seeing void stickers on the mag cover as well. I think void shows up as it is, if the engine iden sticker is pulled off...???

So I'm the owner of the sled being discussed here. What all do you guys wanna see and I'll try to get some pics. I don't know anyone else with a 600 around to compare my motor to and am unfamiliar with what a production model should look like. The prototype decal is just a sticker and is halfway peeling off...its nothing special, I prob wouldn't have even noticed it for a while if XCRider hadn't noticed it.

Sled has a 60 day warranty is all and Polaris is giving me 30 days to decide if I want the new top end. I'm leaning towards no on the new top end for a variety of reasons, but a free new top end is tempting. The sled has just under 1100 miles, of which I've only put on about 75 of those miles.

Run it and compare with others, check compression, check bore if really curious. Bet it is stronger than other 600's. Topends are cheap if you ask me...
