09 XP Pull Cord

Yesterday was out and sled ran awesome and loving it more and more. However on my way out I stopped then went to pull the cord and it just ratcheted out without any compression. I pulled it a bunch and still nothing. So we started it with the rope on the clutch. However when I got home I pull the cord again and there was compression. Never had this before. So wondering if some ice got in there or if when hot whatever is in there does not work properly...any advice would be helpful

Norona,

We've seen two so far in our rental fleet and have heard of a couple more. The first one did exactly what yours did and from what we can figure out on the other one was the internal knot was catching on the pawl not allowing it to slide and recoil. Tore it apart and retied the knot, so far so good.

My 09 x after about 45 miles on sled i got home and tried to pull over go get off of trailer and it would not recoil back in had to do some jigging to get to go back. After reading a few posts on xp i read that the stock can gets way to hot and is so big that it keeps all the heat in and eventually will fail the recoil. I went with aftermarket can and foil taped the outside of the recoil and have never had any problems to date and i have approx 200 miles on her. Hope this helps

Thanks guys, I have a can on it and am waiting on my vents. It pulled out and recoiled but when I pulled there was no compression, I could only feel the ratchet....?

lol

10 years later, and doo still can't get a recoil to last on their engines...

Sorry, I'm not a Doo hater, but I've dealt first hand with my share of broken recoils on my Doos...
Why can't they get this simplest thing figure out? sheesh

I have pulled on a rotax starter for over 30 years and might of rebuilt 2 of my own. Have not had problems for years and I'll arm wrestle you any day. lol.

Its 30 below here and I just pulled my 08 xp 25 -30 times no problem (except it took too long to start ) I'm sure its a simple fix , I dont think BRP changed anything from the last few years. Warranty!

In early november I started a thread "Beware 09 xp owners". Same deal with mine. First ride on the sled, pulled the coard maybe seven times before it stopped working. Had to start it off the primary. I dropped it off at the dealer. They called me an hour later asking if it started working again. I said NOPE. They said, well it works now. So they put an 08 recoil on and no problems so far. My guess is they get hot and expand, making something malfunction. Let them cool down and........presto, they work again.:confused:

Mine also pulled out once and would not go back in (First start of the day), messed around with it until it would go back in, and rode the sled anyways, started working again and has been fine ever since, I am with you on the trust part. Two days later the 07 did the same thing this time after I got it started it was making a funky noise, in about a minute it was producing a funky smell, in short it let loose inside and the friction it caused melted the whole works together, only thing salvageable was the spring and the housing. Then the bar warmers went out on the wifes 06, bad week!!

recoil issue

Went out with a new one and after the 5th start of the motor, it would not catch. We started by hand, and that seemed to fix it as it never happened again the rest of the day.

Weird.

Now you know why E-Start is becoming popular. My next Doo is gonna be E-Start.
I have owned two late model ski-doo's, both have had recoil problems. Sometimes 100% is not a good thing.

Analyse and lube moving parts with light viscosity grease

Went out with a new one and after the 5th start of the motor, it would not catch. We started by hand, and that seemed to fix it as it never happened again the rest of the day.

Weird.

Take apart and look very carefully for any problems. Metal fillings, signs of interference with anything such as starter cord Grease when reassembling.

Also when you pull, do this always: Pull cord lightly till it catches( pawl in spline), then give it the pull to start it. This saves your starter mechanism from excessive wear and tear. If you just pull on your start cord it is going to skip the odd spline and cause rounding of spline teeth and will get progressively worse. I have never had a problem with any sled start mech, think about how your machine works and maintain it. Most machinery from factories is assembled very quickly and care and attention to detail is very often not there, ie rubbing wires, lubrication, dropped fasteners sky is the limit.
I got a few spare bolts in my xp down on the belly pan.

Hope this sheds some light on the situation.

email me if you are inerested in some super strong tunnel stiffeners for your Xp or other model at peterfireblade@yahoo.com. cheers
