09 m8 or 09 m1000

Curious about this answer myself. Concerning WyoBoy's questions, I'm probably in the class of riders who not really much of a wrench, basic stuff so anything further would have to be self taught. My riding style is boondocking and Eastern Candian hill riding with a lot of low speed trail breaking thru the trees. Maybe a 162" would be a little better for the low speed floatation? I'm about 225 # in my B'day suit.

tryin to decide what sled to get . i think i wat a 153 and am 6'4 and 200 pounds and do not know what to go with a 8 or a 100

I'll throw in my $0.02 because I was in the same boat as you last Saturday ...

So, my disclaimer is, I have very little seat time on both sleds, however..

I decided to go with the M8 over the M10 .... primarily because I got a better deal on the M8, but also ...

I spent the last several years riding a heavier sled (900 RMK), and while I got to where I could move it through the trees pretty well, it was always a lot more effort than I felt like it was worth. My 900 RMK is set up pretty well too ...

When deciding to go with the M8 or the M10, I rode my riding buddies 2008 M10 SnoPro 162" a few times .... The one thing about those M10's is, they definatley have power. Definatley have TONS of power ... but, you pay the price in the added weight on the nose of the sled.

The Catch 22: The M1000 is the most purpose-built deep snow sled you can possibly buy right now. It's meant for riding in no less than 4' of powder and climbing hills. It is definatley the best sled right out of the box to get for deep snow .... but, IMO, the trade-off is it's a lot harder to ride in anything BUT deep snow conditions. It's a lot easier to throw that sled around in 4' of snow than it is 1' or 2' of snow .... So, I thought long and hard about it .... and took a real hard look at what type of riding conditions I typically get where I live, and when I go riding what kind of riding do I do, etc .... since %90 of the riding I do is boondocking through the trees in much less than 4' of fresh pow, I decided "Ya know, that M8 is lighter and I bet for the way I ride it'll work perfectly for me" ....

So I went with the M8 ... I've only got one ride in on it so far, but I've been pretty impressed with how easy that sled is to ride.

I'm not saying the M10 won't keep up with the M8, of course it will .... it just seems like IMO, you have to be a better rider and be in better shape to ride the bigger heavier sleds and do well on them .... I'm 6'4" and ~260 pounds and in pretty damned good shape too .... so I'm pretty sure I could have 'handled' the M10, especially coming off the 900 RMK ....but ....

I think you just really have to take an honest look at how you ride ... If you want a sled that is gonna be the best sled on the snow when it's bottomless powder, get the M10 for sure.... if you want something that will be a little more forgiving in anything less than ideal snow conditions, get the M8..

Anyways, my $0.02 .... take it for what it's worth :D

There's no replacement for displacement (and the torque it brings with it). The weight difference between the 8 and the 1000 is a little more than the weight loss of an aftermarket can. Many guys think you need to mod the 1000, but mine and my dad's are both nearly stock (other than a can and a larger air horn on the airbox) and they work great. With a 153" I've never had any trouble getting anywhere I wanted to go. It's easy to throw around (I'm 6'2" 160lbs) and the extra torque and power is there when you need it. Just because you have the extra power doesn't mean you have to use it.

I was originally going to buy an 8 but once I rode the 1000 I had to have one.

well my brother and I both ride 07's, his the 8 and mine the 1000. same size of track 153. I would buy the thousand. i had an M7 last year and loved it, but needed more power. rode his 8 and didnt notice too much more. but got to ride a 1000 and once u have that power.. its nice. like the dude said above. you dont always need it. but its sure nice to have it when u do need it. :D and when it really comes down to it. i dont even think bout the weight. If u have some SLP powder pro ski's (thats what i got) i noticed that i wasnt sinkin in that powder..especially if u know how to ride a sled, weight shouldnt be a factor with 200 cc of extra power. it also depends on what kinda money ur gonna be spending on the sled. but i vote the 1000

Just to let some of you know

Don't compare the 08 m1000 to a 09 m8 or anything older than a 09 . The 09 is so much different that it should be considered a different chassis. the 09 162 m1000 I have feels much lighter than a 153 08 m8 and has so much more power and traction its ridiculous. I have done more technical riding on my sled than ever thought of with any of the 08 and older sleds( had to relearn how to ride)

If you think its hard to throw around a 09 m1000, suspension plays a big role and if you know how to ride. I have started at the bottom of a hill sitting down and gone to the middle of it( a steep hill ) and sidehilled more than a 100 yards(sitting on the seat the whole time). taken corners on the trail over 35mph on just the inside ski. turned 90* at 30mph in a foot of snow sitting down by tipping it up on the inside ski, like hitting a burm on a dirt bike.

a can will drop 12 lbs off the m1000 putting it darn close and if your over 200lbs you cant feel the 4lbs of difference.

I second this post....My buddy does things sitting down on his 09' M1000 that should not be done. It almost pisses me off as I fight with my XP whilst he sits his fatass down and rips and rails anything and everything.

The M1000 is simply an increcible machine for lil' dudes with mad skills, big dudes and or high altitude riders.

A 250 pound manbeast on a sled at 10-11K above sea-level? Belongs on an M1000.....I'm giving my XP the rest of this season to "Get Right"...If it aint got its get right by seasons end its going on craigslist and I'm joining team Diesel!!

09/10 M1000's have to go down in history as one of the best deep snow, high elevation machines ever built. The Torque and sheer grunt factor of the big Uno Litre' are undeniable......It also handles and feels lighter on the snow than my XP until it gets stuck:eek:

But then what isnt heavy stuck?

Pipe, Y-Pipe, Can, Fuel Box = 190HP for what $1200-1400 bucks?. Thats friggen Turbo 800 power on a budget considerting you can buy a leftover 09 M1000 for $8400-$8700 bucks. Shade under 10 grand and you have brand new sled with a Buck Ninety 800 eating ponies? A steal IMO.

Cost a guy 15 grand to ride a 190 Horse 800....Is that guy that stoked with 20 pound weight savings? Gimme the extra 5 grand for beer and hookers!!!

Word on the street: Avoid the 07/08's!!

I myself have had an 06 M7 which I loved - except that it had no bottom end power at altitude. I traded up to an 09 M8 last year. It had more bottom end power, but not stretch your arms power. It felt like it had about the same top end hp as my slightly modded M7, but with a better low rpm power band. This year, I bought an 09 M1000 -not because I was unhappy with the M8, but because my brother bought an M1000 and I did not want him out classing me in machines since we are about equal riders. I do not have much seat time on the M10 yet, but the power delivery is awesome. The power is "right now". I have yet to ride in deep powder, but my sense is it is going to feel much the M8 handling wise. Plus, the draw of being able to get 190 hp with a few mods was too much incentive for me to pass up.

Good info. In the 07-08 era, which one would be best to buy, M8 or M10? I might be upgrading next year and I'm sure an 09 won't be in the budget.

between the 07-08 I liked my 07 better than any of my friends 08's, but the 4 post clutch will break and the fuel map on some have been scetchy. If the 4 post held up I would have one on my 09. the 07 also handled better but you paid for it with weight penalties. If you don't have money to spend on modds or replacement parts I would get an m8. But then again you can buy m1000s for less you just have to really check them out, I have yet to see one without mods. (pull pipe look at pistons, compression check, have dealer check clutch's:rollers, stress factors. Also you can convert the 08 to a E engine reverse which you can't on the 07, Buy I would worry about to much changing you would be better of to leave it basic and upgrade when you can.
