09 M8 162, SLP clutching not working, need help!

09 M8 162, SLP intake and pipe setup, MTX 71g, stock springs and 40/36 helix.

They did have 73g but I took the rivet out to get more R's. I ran it at about 8-10K feet and it would not make 8100 rpm, kept falling back to 7900. When it would get 8100 I got 42 - 44 mph track speed. At 7900 only 38 mph.

My friends 09 153 kicked my azz all day, we are set up the same except he has different clutching.

I am about to ditch the SLP clutching unless someone has an idea to make it work.

Also, the primary spring has the paint wore off of it on the outer part of the clutch, (the side not towards the motor) what does this mean? Is something hitting the spring?

could try a higher finish rate spring for more rpms and keep your weight to load the motor. the primary spring bulges in the middle becuase it can't spin as it compresses and hits the cup on the spider. i used these glide washers they are like a cheap shift assist and seem to help unless you want to have a machine shop open up the cup on a lathe....

It looks like the primary spring needs replaced (it is orig. and has 1K miles now) and I need some Hi torque or Rock rollers.

Is anyone else running less weight with a 162 track, and is there any advantage to Cat weights over MTX?

I read your post,
There is a post at the top of the arctic cat section titled.,

"question on clutching with SLP Pipe kit on 09 M8 SP 153"
It may have some information in it that may help you.
You failed to say what your friend has for clutching in his 153 that is
beating you so bad. Please post that info. Thanks Rickm

I have read the 153 post, I think the problem is that SLP never had a 162.

I ride with one of the guys from SLP and thier 153 ran really good but the setup on my 162 just ain't working. I called SLP and talked with them but I am looking for more info from people with no dog in the fight.

My friends 153 was clutched by a guy in Rigby who will not tell you what he does, but it works good. I need to look at his setup closer.

The one common idea is the rollers and the primary spring.

Here's my set up on a stock '09 M8 162 for 10,000 ft. +/-.

primary: AC Orange/White, 72g Dalton weights, thunder glide washers.
secondary: AC 36, Goodwin Dk Blue spring, shift assist.

I am very happy with this set up. I arrived here after making incremental changes one at a time with input from others on this forum. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my 153"

I tried rock rollers and shift assist, and the 71gram mtx weights.

I dropped to a 68 gram mtx weight which sloved the problem. I bought them from a guy running a 162"

I dont think SLP's clutching recomendations are even close. the SLP pipe combo makes its power at a higher rpm. Most assume that more power means they can add weight. problem is the added weight keeps them out of the power band needed to make the extra power.

hope that made sense ?

and the 2010 M8 162 comes with 68 gram weights for that very reason

Talked with SLP again and they want me to go back to a straight 36 helix.

Everyone else I have talked with thinks that going to 68g weights is the ticket.

I think that I will go with weights first and helix after that if needed.

I think I am basicly over weighted and maybe over helixed for high altitude.

Should I do the rock rollers or not?

I would add the rollers if you switch out your helix. Only takes a few minutes and you only have to change out three if you want.

Is your helix ( 40/36 ) a progressive or angle cut ?

IF u are seeing 8100 then ur rpms are falling back to 7900, sounds like u need a stiffer primary spring as stated in the first reply. Try something with a finish rate at 320 or 340. Remember to only try one thing at a time.

just a note on the springs if you want to try a higher finish rate. I found the slp springs to be a littler larger outer diameter and it fits even tighter in the spring cup. so if your having spring bind, i think slp springs may make it worse...

Check out the thread in performance modified on MDS adjustable weights! They are amazing i would ditch the slp weights and buys those i have a set they are super aggressive and my sled pulls like crazy and never loses R's! You dont even need new springs or anything. its an awesome weight!
