09 D8?

About to purchase an 09 dragon 800 155. Dont know much about the iq chassis sled, is there anything other than the major engine recall, that I need to be aware of before i buy this sled? any helpful input will be appreciated

You might think about putting the center head light in to help the Voltage Reg. I have the 08 and the 09, both with updates. Lost the ECU due to the voltage reg. going out on the 08 (after update), Put the third head light in and have not had another problem.

I've never heard about adding a headlight. I've had two IQ sleds (700 and 800) and loved them both. The chassis is great. Make sure the update was done. Get a PCV to modify fuel control (and gain some HP and lose bog). You will need Better Boards to help with snow evacuation. HPS makes a great lightweight can that sounds sweet. I changed my Walker Evan shocks to Fox Float Evol R's and it was a great but expensive update. Best mod for me was changing from the 5.1 track to the camo extreme. I did a head mod (stock head milled) with stock pipe mod (cut down) and the sled out ran a lot of 800's. THis is a good sled. Don't hesitate. There were some bad voltage regulators but I never had a problem.

There was a post about adding some more grounding but can't find it yet but i will i have made thr wire just have not put them in yet.

Can you please post a pic or provide more details on the 3rd light installation?

So you added the center light now explain to me how that will keep the volt reg from going out.

Run it with the other lights, don't delete anything just add the third light, and you get more draw off of the voltage Reg. Will not get near as hot. Lose the voltage Reg, Lose the ECU. With the D8 there is to much juice comeing for the Reg. has no where to go, except into the ECU, Then Poff!!!! Has worked real well on the sleds that we have sean problems with the Volt Reg, and ECU. MOre Draw no more REG, and ECU burn ups!!!!

Have all the sleds in a storage van hard to get any pic's in there, the light goes in the center hole, of course ( I used a dremel ) to make the hole. Wires into the Stock lighting. This light only works on High beams, which I run mine all the time there to get that draw. I plan on doing one on my sons sled this fall 08 D8 and will take some pic's to post. (OH) this fall is just around the corner!! :face-icon-small-hap

Probably not a lot of help, but here's a link for the kit... EDIT: not specified for the 800, but they are available.

They are quite bright, I have one on my 900 (was already installed when I bought it) and it's really nice for night rides:D

How does adding another current drawing device help your voltage regulator? I think that may be a bit of speculation/luck. Heat is a factor of current disaptation through heat loss energy. Thats where your electric bill goes...right out into the air. The more current or electricity you draw from a curcuit the more heat that is generated. Basic Electronics 101. The majority of the heat is generated by the motor(I have been testing this) Any voltage spikes that are generated by the Stator that have a frequency and voltage high enough to take out an Vreg. will do that no matter how many head lights you have. The components are cheap, weak and buried in potting compound that holds in more heat. It sits above yopur clutches and is buried in a plastic case...just piss poor design of a 1.50 part. Whne you buy these type of Vregs by the thousand the cost is very little. The mark up is great.

You answered your own question. Heat is a factor of current dissipation either through the voltage regulator, or the added head light. Preferable the head-light and not the voltage regulator reducing the temp of the VR. In other words the excess voltage from the stator is going to the headlight and not the VR. I am no electrial engineer but I think this is the basic logic of those adding a head light. It would be hard to validate adding the headlight is reducing the amount of failed VR, or the new VR are of better quality. I have read that the new replacement VR pn 4012476 have a different part number than the old ones pn 4011731 because they improved them. Seems if the newer one are having less failures than the old ones.

That would make sense.... Along the same lines of the people who take off their hood in the spring time, you have to have something drawing the power or your gonna burn something up from not having enough loads on the system. The more you load the system, the less excess current needs to be regulated.

Luck maybe? But it is the extra juice that has no where to go that was making the problems for the VR and in return the ECU. We went to the thrid light after having this discution with the guys at our favorite SW Idaho Snowmobile shop, it is the same as running lights on High beam and hand warmers on High all the time. Just for the draw. With the new VR they came up with might fix the problem. But I am not going to take that chance. The third light is a lot cheaper than, say an ECU, or even a motor. It has worked well for several of use around here, Before the thrid light 200 miles on the average, puff. After the third light 1000 miles on the average, on 3 sleds, no puff.

But we siple' fok rond' he'r

Not sure if you have had a look at this thread. Check it out. It has some good information. Others are also saying to add a grounding strap to help and check all you accessory plugs to make sure they aren't grounding out.
