09 D8 155 questions

sledking

Hey there guys. I recently bought a used 09 d8 with 630 miles. The guy I bought it from had the motor redone last season mid season. He said he rode 300 miles with no updates and had no problems and after the motor updates he rode the other 300 and had absolutley no problems. It is completely stock except n slp can. I ride in MN 90% of the season.
Now heres my questions:
I have read alot of stuff on here about people having alot of problems, but I've seen it that one guy can ride 1000 miles and have every problem out there and then the next ride 1500 and have not a one? Are these sleds really that hit n miss on problems or is it how your drive n take care of it??

I am in the process now of putting in vents in the shock towers for both sides to help eliminate heat issues. What else should I be doing this sled to make it run good? or should I be just waiting til I ride it this season n go from there. I run it in the garage now and it idles fine and it seems to be plenty snappy on the throttle.

If anyone could please give insight to me on what to do I would greatly appreciate it??

i.e...parts, mods, or whatever I need to make it reliable and give me the power I should expect from a sled like this.

Thanks Everyone

I have the same sled, but I live in MT. If I had to guess the number one thing people will recommend is a fuel controller, most likely the power commander 3 or 5. I live and ride above 6000 feet, so I have never really had the need for one. I redid my clutching completely for my elevation and that made the biggest difference. This year I might concentrate on a different suspension set-up and maybe a different head.

The first thing I would do with this sled is install a PCV fuel programmer. Contact Jim at Dynotech. He will get you set up. IMO, a PCV is a must if you ride this sled in low elevation. Made a world of difference when my D8 was stock.

I have the same sled I live in duluth, and do most of my riding there with a few trips out west per year. I have an SLP single exhaust, slp Highflow air intake, vents, and recommended clutch setup with the slp exhaust (found on slp's site). I run 91 octane non-oxy fuel with the detonation sensor located by your spare belt plugged in as recommended for non oxy fuel. over 1,000 miles put on in MN and haven't had one problem

Go to the sticky's in the Iq section and go to (increasing your IQ) Mountainhorse and others have pretty much covered anything you may need to know and or check for. I have run three different 800 Dragons, over 7000 miles total and not one burn down. I feel the T.P.S. is the first and most important. There are instructions in the increase your IQ thread on how to check it yourself. Not all 800 Dragons need a fuel controller, my 08 800 163 ran very well without, I tryed a PC V my 09 800 155, it did not change much, so I put it on my 09 800 163, and it did make a big difference on it. I would check the obvious things, belt, clutch (primary and secondary), clutch align, front left motor mount, TPS, pull your Y pipe and check for piston scuff, check that the head light besel is sealed to keep snow dust out of intake, and change fuel filter. If you have piston scuff and need to change the pistons, I would consider a fuel controller, other wise I would ride it first. I hope this helps.
