09 Assault Front Shocks

Hey guys. Just getting stuff ready to go and was pulling the front shocks off to get them gassed up and got a small ding in one of the shafts. Just wondering how bad they need to be to cause problems. This one is just deep enough to catch your fingernail on. Not real bad but hate to get out west and have a shock go down. Any info would be great.

What happened is when i got the bolt out It hit the shaft hit the end of the top spindle bolt. (I know, i'm an idiot) But anyway, its small enough if you weren't looking for it you wouldn't notice it but it's there. Looks like a small rock chip and is about 2/3rds of the way down the shaft.

I will have a tendency to scratch at the seal... a single seal that holds back over 400 PSI of pressure.

The shafts are anodized and nick up very easily... dont throw away that pink foam cover that the sled is shipped with... the tag on that says to install that whenever the sled is not in use!

Walker tried some prototype hard chrome shafts, but they did not work out. (icing)

At least not until you get the SPG Boots!!

I had a ding from spring riding (threw up a rock riding across a bunch of gravel road, either me or my riding buddy, not sure), took it in to Fabcraft, they put it in a bucket of water and compressed and uncompressed the shock using a hydraulic press and looking for bubbles. No bubbles. So they dressed the ding up a bit with a fine file and paper so it won't worry on the seal much, tested it under water again using the press, and it was still good. Pumped up the nitrogen to "better-than-new" specs and I am good to go. Also had them pump up the other side and put new updated pistons in both back shocks (like the newer dragons).

Sled did not come with those little foam pieces. Made my own out of pipe insulation. Better than nothing! (Why didn't Polaris just put boots on them...)

So it might be OK but you should check it out like Fabcraft did for me, like you said it would be bad to ruin a trip over a $50 - $100 part (plus labor)... maybe see if someone would "loan" you a spare shock for the trip...

Thanks guys. I brought them in to the dealer this afternoon. Guy in the shop said he's seen way worse with no problems. I went ahead and ordered new set of shocks and springs for a 2010. I've always liked the air shocks but just getting tired of getting them charged. Anyone looking for a spare let me know. I'd be willing to sell them as a set or separate.

I switched to the 2010 shocks also. You won't be disappointed.

r the fox floats as touchy as w/e airs.

I had floats on my last sled IQR build, and there were like new with 1000 miles on them, with no covers. So i don't think they are quite as touchy as the WE's! I have float 2's on my current sled but no miles.
