long story short.....i need 2 new pistons for my assault. is the updated 2 ring polaris pistons as good as anything?? if so would anybody have 2 new 2ring pistons i can buy?

what are ppls thoughts on say wiseco??

THANKS

the oem piston is a very high quality piston,i just put my engine back together after having slp do some cylinder porting. They [slp]rec the oem pistons

I went with the Wiseco and know mechanics that recommend them too. The problem with the OEM pistons isn't the quality, it's the size. They are too small. Ever hear the saying, "hotdog down a hallway". The only way I have found to get them into spec is with the Wiseco pistons. Otherwise you are basically building a motor that is wore out before you even pull the rope.

From my experience and what i have been told, OEM is better than wiseco because of different expanding rates of the mettle's.

How have the wiseco pistons worked for you?

So far so good. Only about 300 miles on them. Which I guess is better than a lot of people have experienced with the OEM's. I did a few other changes to the motor at the same time. Engine is noticably smoother and engine temps are consistantly low. They have earned my trust.

You read some negative stories on the internet about them (I think past history), but I've sold hundreds of Wiseco's without ever a complaint. I know the modern Wiseco is developed using many of the same components used to control expansion that a cast piston would.

If the OEM pistons are expanding enough to fill that gap then I would consider them to be an inferior grade of piston due to the severe expansion. At least that is what my experience has taught me.

I am curious why wiesco have got a bad rap with snowmobiles. I am new to snowmobiles, but not new to engines. Many have the wiesco prolites and consider them to be the best for dirt bikes and 4 wheelers. I have ran wiesco in my bikes for years and never had a failure or even heard of a failure, other than damage from running lean. My d8 only made is 400 mile on oem before the bottom skirt broke off and went through the case. I am not sure why everyone feels oem is better with such a bad track record so far.

I am by no means an expert, but i have not experienced any failures and neither have a lot of my friends. I have 2800 and some miles on my 09 d8. I guess i did have my top end replaced, all it took was one ride to score the pistons, thanks to the infamous mid range lean condition. The only piston failures i am aware of are in boosted applications, and i know of one 700 that had piston problems, but it was later discovered that the wrist pin was installed incorrectly.

I do know of many instances where OEM pistons have been used for years and thousands of miles on nitrous sleds with out any cracking or issues.

Thefullmonte, what do you mean OEM pistons are not in spec? i am not saying you are wrong, as i am sure you have much more knowledge on this subject than i do. I just haven't been in the know i guess?

OEM specification right out of the Polaris manual states that piston to cylinder clearance should be .0037-.0052. I believe they even increased that in 09 to .0057. Which in reality most of them have been measuring around .0068 including mine.

Wiseco specified .0049. Mine was .005. Way closer to where it needed to be.

This is why I know Polaris mechanics who are just sick over these sleds and how Polaris has handled it. Imagine having to do warranty work on someones sled and the only way to maintain the warranty is to replace faulty parts with more faulty parts. This has been the standard operating proceedure from Polaris for the last 3 years (at least). This doesn't sit well with people who have moral values. Sorry for the rant. At least it is snowing here woohoo. :thumb:

interesting.... very interesting..... I can't offer much more help, except for it helps in life to have morals. But it helps even more if you have FLEXIBLE morals
