So this summer my dad bought a 09 600 144 from a rental place. They said it had the typical wear and tear, but nothing else.
Well, we got it out this weekend and it had some additional problems which I'm hoping someone out there can help us address.

1)there is no mode switch so he can see temperature/rpm/mph, and it looks like there never was a mode switch to begin with, so the question is would the wiring be underneath the plastic?
2) There is a lot of play in the handlebars. Does this mean that something is just lose, or does it mean something is worn out and will need to be replaced?

3) there was a rattling sound that was coming from the right side of the engine compartment(where the chaincase is). It started around 5800rpm but it wasn't as noticeable at lower rpm. Right now we think its either a bearing or the chaincase. One person described it as "it sounds like when you put a playing card in the spokes of your bike"

If anyone has any idea on these problems it'd be great if you would chime in thanks!

For #1, the wiring should be there.

For #2, a bushing is probably wore out, look at dirtcheapsnow.com and look at the schematics they have fairly fast shipping, used them for a few parts in the past.

My steering was really loose when I got mine. It had high miles, I just tighened the linkages (sounds way easier than it is)

There is one under the carbs that was really loose, and one on the right side under the linkage boot.

didnt need any new parts

Okay cool thanks! but does anyone have an idea on what that noise is??

The obvious thing, is to check your chain tension. If that seems good, I'd pull the chain case cover for a look see. If all is good inside, shake the can while it is off. Check for other loose parts before putting the can back on.

Chain case bearings are not a common failure.

The noise might be a gear in the chaincase that has a couple of teeth missing. the sled I've got has had that gear lose teeth two different times. can't remember if it was the top or bottom, but that might be what the noise is.
