08 XP Choke Lever in Deep Snow

So, yesterday my XP was bogging intermittantly - cutting out and almost stalling from time to time. I figured out what the problem was - the choke lever on the cowling was getting activated by the flow of snow over the hood.

Has anyone had this problem?
If so, have you found a good solution?
i.e. relocation, different choke mechanism, etc?

Thx in Advance!

MtnDoo

Ya, stop the sled, look up to the heavens, and say "Thank you for this all this amazing powder."

Had it happen a few times last year, but I didn't worry about it. It only happened on those few bottomless powder days. After you find out what it is, you just reach down and flick it a few times if it happens again. I was going to see if you could just turn the lever around, opposite way, but haven't done that yet.

Here is a long, dumb story...

Yup, those levers flip up real easy...

First ride of the year ended up being a night ride, overcast, in the trees, darker than than you-know-what. One of those nights where you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. A buddy got his XP stuck down a steep gully in the trees, and I stopped to help him out. I left my sled running for about ten minutes, using the headlight to illuminate his sled, so we could see what we were doing. We got him out, and I went to leave on my sled. It immediately started running like crud, and I figured that it fouled a plug, as it sat there and ran so long idling. So I go ripping on it, trying to heat up the plugs and burn them off. Didn't work, sled was still stumbling. So I stop, and pull the plugs using another sled's headlight to see. Plugs were a little dark, but still dry, as if they were still both firing. I didn't want to waste a new set of plugs, so I put them back in, and ripped around some more, trying to "clear it out". Still ran like crud. I was just about ready to stop, and put my fresh plugs in when just out of the corner of my eye, another sleds headlight illuminated my console area, and I see that the choke lever is flipped up! Flipped it down, sled ran perfect! What an idiot, I am thinking go myself, ALWAYS check the little things, don't be quick to come to conclusions. I got a good ribbing from my buddies about that. I figure, that when I went back to get on my sled, I tossed my gloves in front of the bar riser on the console to put my helmet on, and when i grabbed them again to put them on, one of them caught the lever and flipped it up. It was so dark, I never noticed.

Long dumb story over.

As for your problem, I would just re-install the choke cable so that the lever points backwards... wish I had powder like that right now!

I had it happen a few times last year and tried to spin it 180 degrees but the cutout is wrong to do this and I might have to drill to a round hole. Anyone do this yet?

Thanks guys - yes, snow is amazing - 5-7 feet of fluff and high winds - but at 11,000ft it's pretty standard.

I think I may try to spin it around, or re-locate it.
I thought maybe I could add a velcro strap to hold it down after starting.

MtnDoo.

Sounds like a terrible problem to have. There's gotta be a way to hold that thing down on those few deep powder days.

It's easy to turn around, just push the pin out holding the lever and turn it around and reinstall the pin:o

Yes - turning it around makes sense, but I suspect when carving on the right side it would still get knocked around/activated. The little switch doesn't seem to be very stout - kind of wobbles around. I may try to rig some sort of velcro mechanism to hold it down.

Thx all!

MtnDoo.

MtnDoo,
Are you saying that yours is in the down position when not being used and it has to be flipped "up" to activate the choke? Here is how both of our 08 154X's came from new which your saying is opposite of yours..??

push the small pin out that holds the lever on, filp the lever around and put the pin back in, have done this to all the xp's in our group, just need a very small screwdriver or punch.

Never gave it much thought of how easy it was. Great idea though, thanks for you guys suggesting this.

I turned mine around last year. had to drummel the notch out. It was about the time everyone was talking about the air intake clogging....well guess what? It wasnt that. It was the choke lever. :face-icon-small-ton

One day my father just said, "Goddamn it, you're seventeen, stop being a ****ing dinosaur and get a job!"
