I have a 08 RMK 700. Getting ready to go out west. Had the hood up and motor is making a pertty loud pinging sound. Don't think this is normal is it or are these 700s knowen for that. I guess it coud be a rod or a crank bearing but sled only has 1200 miles and compresion is good. Guess I will ride and see what happens. Leaving in 4or 5 days

Any time something sounds abnormal, especially a motor, it usually means something bad. I would at least swing by a dealer and let them hear it. They should have heard enough motors to tell you if it safe to ride. At least that way you will have some piece of mind while on your trip.
sounds same as my 09 700 rmk at 411 miles...and pistons were scored...rebuild...hope that is not same as yours. but that's how mine sounded....good luck....pull exhaust valves and look???
As Randy pointed out, remove the exhaust valves and take a look at the pistons.
After that, in attempt to "isolate" the problem, remove the primary clutch and re-start the engine, see if the noise is still there.

had the same noise on of my sleds. the lock nut that holds the spider on in the primary came loose and was rattling around.

could be the clutch if it just does it when you let off the gas when not moving and it makes a noise the last couple sleds I have hhad did it and never found a problem
