08 M8 diamond drive check

So I pulled the cover off of my brothers 08 M8 this afternoon, everything looks good in there. I assume the little bit of play in the gears is ok? Not the gear with the shaft that the clutch slids on, the other one. Also, it looks like there was no gasket, just a silicone type covering. Is this something I need o buy special?

The 07-08 diamond drives (Mechanical Reverse) are pretty weak unfortunately due to a suspect design, so it is a good thing to inspect that bad boy regularly. I believe a silicon bead is how they are sealed, and actually works very well. You can check with Mike over at BDX to see if he has any suggestions on changing out bearings or seals which would depend on the mileage...I know they make a kit for this. If everything sounds good, and the gears look good, then I would clean the case and put it back together.

I know I have been riding a lot with a buddy on a 08 M8, and his diamond drive has held up very well, added new gears at the end of last season...Just does the yearly maintenance of draining and changing the fluid. Since you actually have it apart, you are above and beyond what most do, and can clean out and gunk.

Check out this post, it will give you a bit more detail on the 07-08 DD concerns:

In order to do a complete inspection, you will need to remove the outer bearing on the gear stack to get to the planetary and sun gears.
There is a gasket kit available, shims must be used with the gasket kit.
If you don't have any leak issues, you don't need a gasket.

Agreed,

It seems like a gasket kit is availble upon request to your dealer, but really only needed if you already have leak problems.

Skylar, just call or email Chad if you want the gasket kit.

He had no leak problems at all, I just need to find out what to use to seal it back up. I'll give Chad a call tomorrow. Thanks John.
