08-m1000 w/ oil light on

Hi guys, I have a 08-m1000 snopro I just picked up used this year and the oil light will not go out. The guage also flashes "OIL." The oil tank is filled to the top and the float is not stuck. Is there any way of testing the oil sensor cable and/or the oil tank float assembly to see which is the culpret and eliminate the guage and wiring to the guage as the problem. Is the circuit normally open, ie. if I disconnect the sensor cable down by the tank, will the light go off? Will this create any problems if I leave it off for an extended period of time? Appreciate any insight into this as I would like to diagnose problem before I start buying and swapping parts.

you can unplug it. this happened on mine too and the oil sensor needed to be repalced. rode many rides with it disconnected.

Thanks guys.

It's definetly normally open. I unplugged it at the wire connection and the alarm went away. I plugged it back in, alarm came back. Tested and retested, same result each time. Tried pulling the switch end out from top of the float assembly with it plugged in and the alarm stayed on. Looks like a bad sensor. Anyone know how this sensor works? Is it a prox sensor? Now that I think of it, I should have tried placing the sensor on a piece of metal and seen if the alarm went away. I'll try that tomorow.
