08 dragon trouble

I do the wrenching for my group and one of my riding partners has an 08 dragon 800 a couple seasons ago despite my opposition he took it to the dealer for the top end update and it hasn't run right since. I fixed the coolant leak and loose exhaust valves. but the thing just doesn't run like it should.

the idle is to low and rough it smokes more than it should. I have checked the TPS twice and everything is just as it should be. it will foul plugs from time too time as well. The oil pump adjustment is right on. I'm kind of at a loss with this thing. it ran like a champ before the dealer had it. any ideas what else I should look for?

thanks in advance !

It wouldnt surprise me if they installed the wrong map. didnt they reflash with the top end update ?

compression was my next thing to check. ordinarily I wouldnt suspect that with new pistons and rings but the local dealer really sucks so I wouldnt put it past them to have screwed the install

Scuffed pistons sounds to me.You can pull the exhaust valves and inspect the skirts as you turn it over by hand. It will be low on compression too.

I doubt it. its been running like this since they put new pistons in but a compression test should tell the story.

the more I think about it Im betting they have the wrong map installed

Sometimes the oil pump are will stick on these. I would check that.

Maps are like throwing darts on these. There are 3 options of maps for the 2010 update:

1) Nov. flash aka the first or original 2010 update map
2) Jan 2010 flash
3) April 2010 flash (more fuel in the mid range)

Generally the update consisted of reflashing to the first 2010 original map.

At your altitude, the 2008 or 2009 flash may work better. The 2009 is the same as the 2008 except it's not near as sensitive for setting the DET sensor.

If you could get your hands on the original head that was removed for the update, that would help the most.

The oil pump sticking wouldnt explain the low idle and I havent noticed it using extra oil . I think Im going to take it to a good dealer I know and have them relfash it. Its worth a shot.

Had similar. Scuffed piston and cylinder. 50 psi on the faulty one. Oil coming out exaust valve. Do as told above to look into it removing exaust manifold.

I notice that it idles fine until it gets too 100 deg. and that's when the rough idle/low idle starts.

Did the dealer dump in a whole lot of break in oil in the tank ?
Sounds like its loading up , to much oil in crank or fuel and oil.
