08 dragon 8 ?efi issues???

Ok 08 800 1400 miles. Has been a great running sled until yesterday. Started from trailhead and almost instantly developed serious deadspot. I am not talkin about a flat spot or a hesitation I mean shut off and through you over the hood if you give it to much throttle. If i let off it does not die, it goes to idle. Sled seems to run fine until it shuts down. No check engine lights, new fuel filter, plugs are wet(rich) but does not foul, good compression, pv's are good. The sled is so rich on top that I cant clean it up with fuel controller, and it is puking black stuff from y-pipe junction.
So my ? is for those of you who have had tps issues, does this sound similar? Or anyone have issues related to spark plug wires/caps do any thing like this? Any other input? This sled has never had any of the stereotypical reliability issues or runability issues until know. For those of you who had problems with v-force reeds how did sleds run when reeds were chipped?

I assume by you asking you have v fore reeds? If so, I would say its your reeds. How many miles on them? Did you look at your pistons when you inspected your power vavles? I have read some only getting a couple hundred miles on the v force reeds then having similar issues. After checking all the easy stuff, spark plugs boots, wire connections, plugs, ect., I would put new stock reeds in. I would also put new throttle body boots. You can also easily check your tps when doing this. The 08 throttle body boots are notorious for leaks and they have updated this part number that seems to be working better.

Yes I have v-force and i know that some have problems however I visually inspected them and saw no damage. If I had air leak such as carb boots it would set off the det sensor and a light on dash right? I really am suspecting the tps. How can I test other than taking to dealer for ohm meter test? Oh and yes checked the pistons they are not the culprit either. Thanks

Kill switch could be a culprit, mine gave me fits and it was easy to troubleshoot. Throttle body boot is probably not your issue but it is likely starting to tear or will soon. I'd highly recommend changing it. I just did mine on my D8 and it was torn on both sides w/ less than 3,000 miles.

Was going through my extra parts and realized I replaced the throttle body boots in 09 when I first got the sled. I inspected reeds a week ago and I could not seee any problem. In my experience when reeds fail, motors get real hard to start and dont idle for $h!t. Anyone have issue like this?

So I got a couple tips from dealer today. One is back to the spark plug wires and caps. Evedently polaris has high speed film of the motor being ran through the rpm range and it shows a lot of vibe ad movement in the caps and the single strand wires can break. Mine could be increased due to my mag side push arm and fastrax solid motor plate I am using to keep the mounts intact. I have replacements on the way from slp for tomorrow. The other item they mentioned is a double wire connector on the pto side of sled that is used to connect diagnostic equipment. Supposedly if this wire contacts the chassis it will ground out and cause issues. Dealer said they know this from 1st hand experience. The only connector like this that I found was up toward the front of sled before wire harness connects to the hood. Almost looks like it was rubbing the heat shield for the pipe right there too. Any of you guys have any insight into this. The way the dealer described it I thought it was more under the motor on the pto side. I will look real thouroghly under the electronics cover as well.

Update

So I replaced the plug wires/caps and the plugs, also found the diagnostic lead that I was told about and isolated it from possible ground. Problem not fixed. I am in the process of solidifying by solder all wiring to my fuel controller and need parts. It looks as if 2 of the connections to fuel box were semi-broken or at least loose. Even though the box scrolled through all functions and seemed to function fine I want to eliminate all possibilities. I started another thread asking for info on connectors in ecu plug. Wish I wouldn't have crashed my jib sled! this sucks! no spare.

SHE"S ALIVE!

So I tracked down a parts harness at a semi-local dealership(premiere polaris, thank you) and replaced the female contacts that I needed. Solidified all my fuel controller connections and vwallaa! she flies like a raped dragon with her hide on fire. Interesting because everyone I talked to about these controllers, including the manufacturer said that if the functions on the box work everything is OK. Not the case in this case. So if you have weird problems double check your wiring. PS or buy a controller with plug and play installation. :face-icon-small-coo:face-icon-small-con

Way to stick to it!! You hammered that out fast. Thanks for the post as well. Very informative.

Kill switch was also acting up occasionally. Had too much tension on wires due to adding a 1/2" in steering post height. Made a little slack in wires and fixed the problem.

this happened to me on my first ride when I got my 09 dragon, I put a riser on it and it cut the wire when I turned and would short out occasionally until It wouldn't start. if you haven't rerouted all the wires on the outside of the gold bracket under the cowling it will probably happen again. the brack has sharp edges

Thanks for posting the results. Too many times people post for help, everyone gives input, then you don't hear anything. You assume they fixed it but all of us don't benefit from the fix. Thanks for posting what you found.
