I have been fixing up my first sled and come across what to me seems like low voltage. Previous owner had one of the headlights unplugged. I replaced both headlights with OEM polaris and started sled up. The voltage meter was 1 bar and the battery light started blinking. Both headlights lit up but then the gauge went dead after 15 - 30 seconds of idling. Unplug one headlight and it starts working again. I have checked for shorts on hand grips and made sure warmers are off.

Any ideas? My research points to a bad capacitor but would like other opinions.

Thanks,
zalez

After more digging, sounds like it could be a voltage regulator. I'm not sure how to go about testing one. I've read if I start up the sled and unplug the voltage regulator and everything starts to work again then the VR is bad. Is this safe to do?

What kind of testing/troubleshooting did you do? I definitely don't want to just start throwing parts at this.

Thanks for the reply.

i talked to a few guys and they told me forsure it would be the vr so i changed it and didnt make a diff. with an omh meter you can check the yellow wires from the stator to see what kind of resistance you get and/or check the stator when its plugged in to see what kind of ac voltage you are making

Thanks for the info. I will grab a couple meters and start checking those out. Here is a dumb question, where is the stator located? I found in some diagrams where the voltage regulator and capacitor is but not the stator.

Thanks again.

I guess I'm another statistic. It was the VR. The mechanic at the dealership in Cheyenne was awesome. He helped me test the theory with a new VR before I purchased it.

I had the same thing happen and then all at once it killed on a pull up a hill and I lost all spark and power to everything. I ohmed the harness and came up with the stator. I pulled it off and sure enough two of the copper bundles were fried I replaced it and all has been well since. I've put about 500 miles on since then.
