08 Dragon 700 cutting out?

My 700 is now starting to cut out when riding. Happens at the end of the day when I get to 1/2 tank of gas. At 5200 rpm and about 38mph. it will act like it shuts off. I have to let up on the gas all the way then it will take off again. Any higher speeds it works okay. Took it to the dealer and spent $150.00 for a fuel filter and for them to tell me there is nothing wrong with it. They said there were no codes and the checked the tps base line and said it was okay. Still think it is the tps. Anyone have any ideas?

cut out problems

look at the stator, rectifier/voltage regulator. Have the same problem. Stator was ohmed out and found 1 set of windings out of spec. There is a procedure for checking this so have your dealer look into it.

STATOR TESTING SPECS 2007-2008 800, 700 & 600 CFI

Real E-Z to test the stator, here's the specs:When the sled is acting up, did you/can you watch the voltmeter on the right side of the dash gauge and see if the voltage is dropping and/or fluctuating??????

Test the wires coming from the stator (+/- 15% at 20* C) w/sled cold, then repeat when warm:

For the 2008 600cfi/700/800 CFI's

1) YELLOW to YELLOW 0.13 OHMS

2) DARK GREEN/RED to GREEN/YELLOW 15 OHMS

3) DARK GREEN/RED to BROWN/WHITE 30 ohms

4) DARK BLUE/YELLOW to BLUE/YELLOW 2.4 ohms

5) WHITE/RED to WHITE 190 ohms

6) WHITE/DARK GREEN to DARK GREEN 190 ohms

7) BROWN /WHITE to GROUND 0 ohms

8) BROWN to GROUND 0 ohms

+/- 15% at 20* C

One more thought, how about taking an old oil pressure gauge, air gauge, whatever and temporarily hooking it up to the schraeder valve (on the fuel line, by using the old style A/C charge kit line available at auto parts stores) by the air box and temporarily mount (duct tape it/wire tie it, whatever it takes) the gauge to the handle bars so that you can monitor the fuel pressure as you're driving down the trail.

Mid to high 50's P.S.I;. is what you wan to see, whether it's idling or doing 100 m.p.h., 1/4 tank or full tank, maybe the fuel pickup line inside the tank is no longer on the bottom????????

Hope this helps[/QUOTE]

Might be a bad spot in your TPS, my 08' 800 did this last year about 2000 miles on it.Would work good most times but when opening up out of a corner it would die like I hit the kill switch, let off and back into it and it would take off fine.Replaced the TPS and cured it.

I ride with a guy with an '07 600 RMK (w/carbs) that does something like that. It only seems to act up on the trail on the way home at the end of the day. I don't know what speeds, but he will be cruising along and then it is just like some hits the kill switch.

He told me that on the last trip he just stopped, let it cool down for a few minutes, and then it was fine.

Tomtana- How did you get it tracked back to the VR? It seems like it would be difficult to troubleshoot something like this. In my experience about the only way is to swap out parts to see if it fixes the problem.

I think the guy's sled that I ride with is under warranty for a bit yet, so we were hoping to resolve the problem.

thanks.. i think i am going to hook a fuel guage on it. try it first..

Replaced Stator, Still Have Same Problem

My '08 700 started cutting out in the spring of 2009. The dealer quickly identified it was a stator issue and replaced it under warranty. The next ride it acted fine until the end of the day when it again began to cut out at part throttle. Took it back to the dealer and he said there were no codes and it ran fine in the shop. The dealer indicated he needed to get it out on the snow to be able to diagnose further. However that was the end of the 09 season.

At the beginning of this year I took it out on some shorter rides to see if it would reoccur. I also added some cooling panels on both the clutch and exhaust side. All was fine and there was no reason to go back to the dealer. However, I went on a longer ride last weekend. It ran fine for over 50 miles but at the end of the day it again started to cut out only a few miles from the truck.

Even though there was good snow for cooling and the engine temp stayed under 130, it seems to be heat related and occurs if you ride for a long time without stopping. It is a pretty frustrating condition since it makes you wonder if it will suddenly get worse when you are way in the backcountry.

My dealer thought it could be heat related also.and wants me to add vents. I have shock tower vents and going to add some more..

I agree that it is likely a heat issue. The funny thing is that is doesn't cut out on the trail to a riding area, it doesn't cut out if you ride trail all day, and it doesn't cut out when running in deep snow all day. But when we come home on the trail after playing in the snow it cuts out.

One would think it would be cooler on the trail.

I dont know if it applies to 08 700'sor not, but we had the very same symptoms on our 07 700 at lower fuel levels. There was a ton of 'em doing the same back in the day.

The fix was putting a T in the fuel pickup line with a Napa inline filter to create some resistance in fuel flow. I think Carls Cycle even produced an update kit that fixed the issue.

Get ahold of MountainHorse on here or call Jack Struthers at Carls and see what they say. There was a lot of discussion on this and the fix worked on ours, I just can't remember now what exactly we did or the part numbers. Someone with a better memory than me will chime in on this or you might start a new thread titled "700 low fuel level bogging issue". That should wake up some of the guys that figured this out years ago. Good luck. EW
