just adding a fan to the top of my vr,and going to relocate the capacitor and was wondering if it needs to be grounded,i was going to mount it to the shock tower, any thoughts???

I was thinking about doing that to, but found there is just enough room to mount it at a 45 degree angle between the VR and the ECU.

Drilled one hole to mount it to the electonics base plate, works great.

I mounted mine on the lower right side of the electronics cover. Lower right as when standing on the sled.

I moved the VR outside the cover ,,on top now the hood vent flows right on it ,hope it helps also used a new 10 VR supposed to b better ,, there is still a design flaw in the electrical system ,as far as Im concerned

Cap & Fan mounting pictures

The cap does not need to be grounded.

If you use a small fan, the cap can still fit above the fan. For a bigger fan (which I used due to get better cooling), I moved the cap outside.

I have a fan bracket template, parts list & fan P/N if you need them.

Thanks for the detailed instructions, I'll have to add a fan, sounds like it makes a huge difference in VR operating temperatures.

BTW I already relocated my capacitor to the area in the lower right of your second picture. It just fits but seems to work well.

ECU fan options

Looks like XS fans discontinued that model. I picked that fan as it has dual ball bearings which I thought would handle the vibration and extreme temperatures better. I 'google'd around, looks like other places still stock it, for example: (http://www.thefanvan.net/servlet/the-436/AVC-DA07015B12U-70mm-x/Detail)

Any of the 70mm x 15mm fans should fit, it's mostly a matter of picking the fan you like best. For reference, the AVC DA07015B12U fan at XS fans was $5.50 + $2.30 shipping when I did my last order (March).

why

i am adding a fan to cool the voltage regulator, because when they get hot they fail and fry the ecu in the process. It hasn't happened yet but i would rather keep the vr cool so i don't have to replace any parts later

The Why & The Where

The following thread has a lot of info on the VR issue:

http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=191767&highlight=ecu

This thread (unscientific poll) suggests that around 15% of dragons have had one or more VR failures:

http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=206663&highlight=poll

Polaris issued a new 2010 VR p/n, no info on how it is holding up so far.

Resistors:
One on-line source is Digikey:

http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&itemSeq=93129713&uq=634255102037363588

There are probably a bunch of on-line sources for the resistor - they shouldn't cost more than $1 but you'll probably get stuck for min order / shipping.
